“Like clockwork, Apple has once again offered up numerous improvements to the iPhone’s software in a June release,” Michael deAgonia reports foro Computerworld. “Although all eyes were on the new iPhone 4 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference two weeks ago, the new smartphone would be just a stylish chunk of stainless steel and glass without iOS 4, the new operating system that arrives today.”
“For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been running Apple’s newly minted iOS 4 to find out whether it, like previous OS updates before it, breathes new life into the iPhone line-up,” deAgonia reports.
MacDailyNews Take: We concur. iOS4 has transformed our iPhone 3GS units. Apple’s folder implementation is, like Apple’s copy-paste, app organization done right.
deAgonia reports, “Apple tends to focus each major iOS release on a few, well-implemented features. This year’s release — which iPad users will get this fall — shows that the development teams at Apple have delivered, among other things, limited multitasking for third-party applications, better application sorting and management, and improved e-mail functions. The end result is an updated operating system that makes using the iPhone a much more polished experience, all without sacrificing battery life.”
“The fourth iteration of the iPhone’s OS is supported by the iPhone 4 (which arrives on Thursday); last year’s iPhone 3GS; and, to a lesser extent, the iPhone 3G that arrived in 2008. Recent iPod touch models are also supported,” deAgonia reports. “If you’re still using the original iPhone from 2007, or the first iPod touch, you won’t be able to run iOS 4.”
5 ways Apple’s iOS 4 ‘breathes new life’ into iPhone:
• Multitasking
• Better application management (folders)
• Better Enterprise support
• Filled to the brim with small enhancements
• Hundreds of new APIs for developers

Hey guys…. when is iOS 4 to be released? Just synced my iPhone and its still 3.1.3 version??
Anyone,…… Anyone…… Beuller???
Just a question.
en ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
I reckon around 10.00 PST.
=:~)
Anyone any idea at what time the software will be available to download?
Waiting all day here in the UK ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Best day to update is Wednesday: the rush has died down and new iPhones are not hogging activation bandwidth. Otherwise we might get a mess like Preorder Day.
The Joy of Tech cartoon is just too funny today.
Other than the downloads taking a bit of time, I have never had any problems installing these major software updates soon after they are released. There are no problems because there is no need to access AT&Ts;site for eligibility, etc. It is just purely an Apple server loading issue at worse.
I predict the release will be ~1PM EDT.
The one thing I did early this morning when I found out that the update was not yet available was to delete songs, videos and photos from syncing and then I did a full sync. This makes it so that the update and initial sync doesn’t take forever. I can add the media files later after I get to play with the new UI for a while. I hate waiting for 20GB of media files to upload to newly updated devices.
I am so happy I won’t have to constantly offload Apps to make room for new ones. Now the hard part will be figuring out a plan for my folders and re-adding all the off-loaded Apps.
I for one will hold off a few days for the update – both to allow any flaws missed during QA to come to light and to avoid the crush of those who want it NOW.
Hey MDN-
I pre-ordered my iPhone 4 after clicking one of your apple ads, hope you got some commission off it…
@OctoberMac
I’m always at work when and update comes out so I cant sync my stuff.. but anytime a new OS has come out I can plug in my iphone and have itunes download the software.. backup my iphone and install the OS and it keeps all my data and stuff. Then when I get home I just sync it and backup there.
I won’t be updating till I can do it without unjailbreaking my phone. I would miss some of the programs I use like mywi and others.
But I will update my non jailbroken iPhone
OK, but is it snappy?
It’s basically i new phone with the retooled iOS 4.
So in as close as I can get to an Oprah voice, “You get a new phone, you get a new phone, and you get a new phone!”
No iMovie for 3GS? I guess it’s an A4 issue?
@Mahoodas
6pm I think
Already downloaded and installed here (UK)
Magic word happened: As in already!
It’s finished downloading, and not starting backup.
ios4 is downloadable!!!!
iOS 4 is really nice. The word snappy is overused, but it certainly fits in this case.
