In a recent report, Forrester’s Sarah Rotman Epps, “estimates that unit sales for tablet computers from all manufacturers will total 3.5 million in 2010,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
“In other words, in Forrester’s opinion, the 2 million iPads Apple sold in April and May were a fluke. It will be lucky sell 1.5 million between June and December — or fewer than 215,000 per month,” Elmer-DeWitt reports. “‘Consumers didn’t ask for tablets,’ she points out in her summary. ‘In fact, Forrester’s data shows that the top features consumers say they want in a PC are a complete mismatch with the features of the iPad.'”

MacDailyNews Take: We addressed this one already yesterday: “Oh, puleeze, Apple alone will sell way more than 3.5 million iPads in 2010 and Forrester’s 2015 number [20.4 million units] is ludicrously, ridiculously, laughably, unbelievably low. So many just don’t get it! It continues to amaze us.”
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers too numerous to mention individually for the heads up.]
Let’s recognize Rotman’s report for what it is – a poor attempt at spreading FUD and a stupidity exhibition.
“If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have asked for a faster horse.” – Henry Ford
Sure that’s why it’s been out for a couple months and they still can’t keep them in stock. Where do these “analysts” come from?
What consumers? M$ fans?
And people get paid good money to write this shite? Where do I sign up?
=:~)
I’ve yet to see a person in public using an iPad. It may just be the flavor of the season
Another case of the galloping dumb.
@rick
Many of us consider iPads an at home device. I take it out periodically to show friends but use my iPhone mostly when I’m out and about.
Today I leave for France. I will be using it on the plane: reading, perusing magazines, playing Sudoku, looking at my France tour guides, watching a TV show or two. Look for me there!
It’s so clearly wrong. And good on Philip Elmer-DeWitt for tearing her to shreds!
“But in the text of the full report, and in the accompanying chart, Epps estimates that unit sales for tablet computers from all manufacturers will total 3.5 million in 2010.”
In fact, Apple has already sold more tablets that this. They sold 2 million in the US only in the first two months. they’ve been available internationally for almost a month now. They will have sold at least another million in the US and at least 500K in the rest of the world.
I’m not an analyst but I can at least do basic arithmetic.
Apple will sell 3.5 million iPads before the end of the summer. Holiday shopping season: fuggidaboudit!
Who are these people?
Do they ever actually look or even touch devices?
Should they let go the bottle and attend an AA meeting.
They seem to view the world through Beer-Goggles’s. Only a person so drunk could say such distorted facts!
Ms. Epps, please seek drug abuse assistance. Help yourself and the rest of us from your torturous words. Please!
Inovation is the art of giving people something they did not ask for because they did not know that they would want it, but they do.
“What do I need a car for? I have a horse and buggy!”
but, but, …. they RESEARCHED it!!
This article shows very faulty logic. I’d bet most people who have bought iPhones over the last three years, and obviously into the future, didn’t “ask” for what Apple delivered. Give me a break.
I guess this could explain the $42 a share price for AAPL.
Hear me out on this…
What if Steve Jobs has a total meltdown and goes crazy? He wants more and more iPad…but all for himself. Production can’t meet his needs, so he orders Apple to buy back as many iPads as it can. This happens sometime during the summer, so Apple will actually see huge *negative* sales on the iPad during the Fall and Holiday seasons.
It all makes sense now.
Apple is DOOMED!
@jaundiced
I’ve been asking Apple for a tablet for 10 years. It’s not exactly what I had envisioned, it’s better.
Just read Digitimes is reporting Apple is selling 1.2 million a month and increasing. Looks like her estimates may be a little off.
Sarah Rotman Epps:
Another pathetic example of neglected potty training.
she points out in her summary. ‘In fact, Forrester’s data shows that the top features consumers say they want in a PC are a complete mismatch with the features of the iPad.'”
I can’t believe no one caught this yet. She is comparing what people what in a PC with a tablet??? WTF??? Why don’t these buffoons ask what top features consumers want in a tablet and see how well that matches the iPad.
BTW… I can’t tear my 3G iPad out of my wife’s hands. Dang! Now I have to get one for myself.
Consumers didn’t ask for the Model-T either. All they thought they wanted was a faster horse.
Let me see the transparent M$ hack is poopoo-ing the 2015 sales of Apple products in order to bash Apple stock today. Well it’s creative you got to give him that.
just my $0.02
Mmmmm… missed Chrissy’s post way up there.
-Posted from the Office of Redundancy office.
Apple stores are still on back order for iPads today. In other words Apple has been sold out since the launch. The demand way, way, way, way, way, way, exceeds the full production of iPads.
Apple will sell what he predicts by the end of this year.
@ rick
I took the Amtrak Acela from DC to New York yesterday. There were four iPads (including mine) in the train car I was in. It’s the perfect tool for a business traveler on a day trip.
