First iPhone 4 camper appears at Apple Store Knox Street in Dallas a week ahead of launch

Victor Godinez reports for The Dallas Morning News that the first iPhone 4 camper has appeared in front of Apple Store Knox Street in Dallas, Texas.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple has sold out of the first batch of pre-order iPhone 4s. New Apple Store online pre-orders have shipping dates of July 14. If you aren’t one of the lucky 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orderers, the only way to get an iPhone 4 on June 24 is to go to a physical store since Apple has reserved the remaining initial iPhone 4 inventory for retail stores’ launch day sales. There’s no telling how many iPhone 4 units will be available for sale at each store. On June 24, iPhone 4 is supposed to be available at Apple, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Radio Shack retail stores. We’d call ahead to make sure that the store from which you’d like to buy will have iPhone 4 units available for sale on June 24.

Over on the MacRumors forums, the camper, Justin Wagoner, has posted:

Greeting to everyone from your famous camper! This is my first official post for MacRumors. One of the users printed off a copy of the thread and brought it to me and I thought it would be fun to join the conversation.

Some would say I am crazy, but I say I’m a very determined fan. In fact I just might be one the biggest Apple fans you will actually meet. I have been the first costumer for this store since 2008 when the iPhone 3G was released.

Normally I only camp out over night, but since I do not work due to the fact I am disabled with a seizure disorder and I am not in school at the point, I figure I just make it a fun experience and do it for a week.

Yes I did reserve a phone, but again, I’m doing it for a fun experience. I haven’t had a trip or vacation in past 10 years so I figured I make it a full week camping trip.

My setup and location has everything I could need to live for a week, even in the Texas heat. Tent is packed with a sleeping gear, a chair, full ice chest of drinks and food, and the Apple staff have been very nice to me treating me like a king. LOL I also brought a extension power cord for phone charging and things that need power. There is even a portable toilet around the back of the store if needed.

That been said, I’m actually doing really well out here. If anyone gets a chance, come join the fun!

  1. He must be disabled…

Are you f*&%^$# kidding me? Yeah I waltzed into my local ATT store and i pre-oredered mine in 15 minutes, at 5pm the day they opened pre-orders…

    A week for a phone. I dunno… That’s some serious mental retardation

  2. Justin, many best wishes and hope you are able to keep a smile on your face with the many challenges in life. I hope that your new iPhone 4 will help to make things just a little easier in life. Lots of more fun too!

  3. “There is only one shot at life, and it’s not in camping out for a cellular communications device.”

Or maybe not. At least he will probably have more fun and meet more interesting people than camping out for a week in some campground.

  4. More power to Justin. My wife don’t follow sports, so Apple is our team. Justin’s not hurting anyone and is not infringing on anyone else. I’m sure he will have a fascinating week, especially dealing with the people who tell him to ‘get a life.’

    We’re with you, Justin!

  5. Funny, I went into the Knox Street Apple store yesterday afternoon (to see the new Mini) and this guy was out there, I kind of figured he was camping out for a new iPhone. When I left the store I drove by as a news camera crew was filming so I probably made the news as a driver who was sitting at the light as they filmed him.

Anyway it was a disappointing trip because I wanted to see and try the new Mini as I need another computer. The store had them in stock but none out for display. They did tell me I could buy one but I couldn’t try one because corporate had not sent them one for display yet. However, I just couldn’t shell out $700 for a new Mini without first checking one out so maybe another time.

Oh and I was surprised that anyone would camp out in the Dallas area heat for a product of any type. Sure I think the phone is great but I certainly would not camp out street side for one when it was possible to pre-order a few days ago.

  6. It’s pretty rare that someone is permanently disabled by a seizure disorder.

I get people coming into my office every single day wanting to be made permanently disabled for the most idiotic reasons – and some for no reason at all, “I just don’t want to ever work.”

  7. I live in Dallas, and this store is a mile from where I live. This is the Apple store where I buy all of my Mac, iPhones and accessories. Last year for the 3GS release this store had a line around the block AND then down the street after that block. I can attest the heat here is nearing 100 degrees every day with a feels like of over 105.

I personally can’t think this is a “fun” experience. On a positve note there is an Amazing mexican resertaunt called Chuy’s about 15 feet away from where he is sitting.

  8. Oh, and the definition of permanently disabled (and therefore unable to work) is that you cannot do even the most basic job. For example, you cannot sit at the front of a Walmart and say “hello” to people as they walk in. If this guy can camp out for a week, he can hold down a job like I just described.

  9. The guy’s not in school right now and thought he’d have some fun. I say good for him! When was the last time you pushed back, took some time for yourself and did something spontaneous and a little crazy? The ones who should get a life are you judgemental blog trolls. “Retard?” Bringing in politics at every opportunity? “Bush was a retard?” “Obama is a retard?” Liberals? Conservatives? Seriously!!!
I thought this was a Mac Daily News blog. Not the verbally-vomit-my-own-political-commentary-on-every-story blog.

  10. Mike F said it best. This guy might or might not get bored, but he’s damn sure going to be hot. The heat indexes we had in Florida last week have moved to TX. I hope he has access to the A/C in the store.

  11. I suggest some of the posters here who are passing negative judgment on Justin learn something about epilepsy. There most certainly are people who suffer from generalized tonic clonic (“grand mal”) seizures who are not able to work – even those who are capable of work find it next to impossible to find an employer willing to hire people suffering from this disorder.

It’s time to become educated and spread factual information, rather than spread prejudice, hatred, and disinformation.
