iPhone 4 confirmed to have 512MB RAM onboard; twice that of iPhone 3GS and iPad

Invisible Shield for Apple iPhone 4!“The original iPhone and iPhone 3G contained 128MB of RAM, while the iPhone 3GS was boosted to 256MB of RAM. Similarly, the iPad contains 256MB of RAM,” Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors. “This discrepancy offers a technical explanation why Apple is not supporting iOS 4 features such as multi-tasking on the original and 3G iPhone — there simply isn’t enough RAM.”

Kim reports, “We have since heard that the upcoming iPhone 4’s RAM has again been upgraded. This will bring it to a total of 512MB of RAM, twice as much as the 3GS and iPad.”

“The added RAM should help overall performance and multi-tasking on the new iPhone 4,” Kim reports. “It could also explain why the iMovie App that Apple introduced at WWDC will only run on the iPhone 4. Apple has said iMovie will only run on the iPhone 4 and not the 3GS or even the iPad.”

  1. That’s a big deal. I thought 256 was small for the iPad. I’m glad the new iPhone has more. Hopefully the new touch and iPad will get a boost and cameras too.

  2. I’m definitely getting nervous that my iPad will be obsoleted by November 2010. I was betting on a 12 month hardware update cycle by Apple when I purchased the 64GB 3G model, but looks like they are ready to update the hardware early. Nuts.

    Please, don’t be a rumor!

  4. also it just suck that it’ll probably take 2-3 more years to know the refresh rates and general time table on the iPad.

    We got iPhone refresh June-July
    iPod September-October
Macs, appletv – When ever the f*ck they feel like it.

    iPads?

You just gotta wonder why they didn’t put 512 in the iPad, i know the upgrade to next gen excuse, but come on, iPad was a bigger unicorn than iPhone.

  5. I expect the new iPad to have 512, or even a gig of ram. Probably cameras too. But I knew that mine would be outclassed in a year anyway, that is the way of things. But it won’t be obsolete; I expect there to still be a demand for the things, and I bet depreciation on them will be low.

  6. There is a rule of thumb in American football that teams make the most improvement of the year between the first and second game. Tech is different for sure, but that is why I will not buy an iPad until the second gen.

  7. People who worry too much about specs should probably get a MacBook instead. The iOS devices are what they are; buy it, use it, and enjoy it.

Apple engineers know the hardware specs and limitations and developers know the hardware specs and limitations, because the hardware is consistent (for each model year) and not upgradable. The variations are very limited, and a device is supported, partially supported, or not supported based on age, not specs. They will design their iOS software to take advantage of and NOT exceed the capabilities of the known hardware types. It’s not like a Mac, where the performance can vary greatly from one Mac model to another based one specs such as CPU type, number of cores, CPU speed, user upgradable RAM, graphics hardware, etc. Such specs are advertised by Apple because they are relevant to the Mac user’s experience. Such specs are not relevant for the iOS user’s experience, so Apple does not advertise them.

  8. after seeing iPhone 4, you gotta wonder why the two aren’t similar in specs, i can understand design, seriously iPad would be in hyperdrive if it had just even face time.

i’m just gonna keep looking on craigslist for some poor unfortunate college student who needs money or wait for the refurbs on best buy and apple’s website.

But hey lets all start rumors for the next iPad already, I am over the new iPhone.
