Fujitsu, Toshiba to merge also-ran mobile businesses into one also-ran mobile business

Invisible Shield for Apple iPhone 4!“Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. unveiled plans on Thursday to merge their mobile phone businesses in October to create Japan’s second-biggest cellphone maker in a rapidly shrinking market,” Sachi Izumi reports for Reuters. “Fujitsu will hold a majority stake in the joint venture.”

“Fujitsu has been keeping its mobile business in the black by focusing on its strengths such as water-resistant handsets, mobile phones with fingerprint readers and phones for older people,” Izumi reports. “But it does not offer cellphones in the growing smartphone segment and is eyeing Toshiba’s know-how.”

MacDailyNews Take: “Toshiba’s know-how.” Today is a day of comedy so far!

Izumi continues, “Smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry combine capabilities of personal computer and mobile phones and are gaining popularity worldwide.”

MacDailyNews Take: Mentioning BOGOF RIM in the same sentence as Apple, as if they were on equal footing… Izumi’s full of jokes today.

Izumi continues, “Toshiba has been selling smartphones based on Microsoft’s Windows in Japan, Europe and some parts of Asia.”

MacDailyNews Take: No wonder they’re consolidating.

Izumi continues, “Despite their dominance in the domestic market, Japanese makers only have a combined share of about 3 percent worldwide, outmatched by bigger and more efficient rivals.”

  1. The japanese can’t write user friendly software to save their lives.

Thats the reason everyone using Roland, Korg, Sony gear for years (especially in the recording industry) has lost all their hair.

Try reading any japanese user manual for proof…

  2. Remember when the iPhone would never make it in Japan because they were so far ahead in the smartphone market. They were using American MS for their phones to start with. Now will probably use American Android. Canadian RIM and American iPhone are what the people want. I have no problem with Japan, I just like that we are now ahead.

@breeze, exactly we just got use to it when the Japanese made all the good electronics.

  3. They rely on Windows Mobile for their OS and are wondering why they are slipping? I’m not saying Android is in any way better than iOS, but it will run on their hardware. Cost less. Offer more features. Be more reliable. Compared to Windows Mobile, that is, not iOS. Any maker of up-scale phones hoping to compete with iOS really, REALLY, needs to get on board with Android … that, or spend a huge chunk of change to develop their own OS.

  4. zumi continues, “Despite their dominance in the domestic market, Japanese makers only have a combined share of about 3 percent worldwide, outmatched by bigger and more efficient rivals.”

Wait…. isn’t the iPhone is the dominant smartphone in japan?

    ;;-)

  5. One thing in the Japanese mobile world that is better: no minutes. The service plans are not clogged with worries about minutes to purchase or going over on your usuage.
