AT&T apologizes for iPad email breach, blames ‘malicious hackers’

“AT&T Inc., reaching out to iPad users Sunday to explain why their email addresses were released last week, blamed the incident on ‘computer hackers’ who ‘maliciously exploited’ an attempt by the carrier to speed the process of logging in to its website,” Andrew Dowell reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“‘AT&T takes your privacy seriously and does not tolerate unauthorized access to its customers’ information or company websites,’ the company said… AT&T sent the comments in an email to the roughly 114,000 users of the iPad 3G it determined were affected by the incident,” Dowell reports. “The carrier said only users’ email addresses and numbers that identify their devices to AT&T’s network were exposed, and that no other personal or account information was at risk.”

Dowell reports, “Last week’s incident involved prominent officials in companies, politics and the military. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said last week it has opened an investigation into the security breach, but wouldn’t say what the probe will focus on. New York-based Gawker Media said it has been contacted by the FBI to preserve information related to the matter, but said it doesn’t believe it is a target of the probe.”

  1. Yes, the matching of the e-mail to the ICCD-ID was short sighted of A T & T. But, it was no big deal. However, every talking head on Wall Street tried to use it to drag down Apple’s stock. DIDN’T WORK IDIOTS! I know you will try something new again. But, Apple and Steve Jobs just make it so hard to make up something real believable. At least for a day or two!

  2. Of course… just like Obama

    Always blame someone else.

Never, never, EVER, admit responsibility or culpability.

A pure indication of leadership… *snicker*

    Oh yeah… it’s all Bush’s fault… yeh… *that’s* it…

  3. Have you done something to disable READER in safari 5??
Very frustrating if you have as I really hate those pop ups when the mouse goes over words. I understand you have to make money advertising but that is just intrusive. Might have to take MDN off my RSS feeds

  4. Wow a record here. Second post is political crap. Guess if fandango hadn’t made it so long he could have been first. Go away please and find someplace that might give a crap about your sickness.

  5. “The carrier said only users’ email addresses and numbers that identify their devices to AT&T;’s network were exposed, and that no other personal or account information was at risk.”

Uh… so ATT does not consider my email address and hardware id to be personal or account information?

  6. AT&T;sent the comments in an email to the roughly 114,000 users of the iPad 3G it determined were affected by the incident.

So what I’m pissed about is ATT never notified me that my account was among the various data stolen. Nothing from ATT until last night. Even then the message from ATT was very generic describing the incident. Generic enough that it could have been sent to everyone with an iPad. This quote above is the first time that any message formally links the message sent out last night by ATT to those whose accounts were compromised. Yes I assumed the worst as soon as I read the article at MDN and shut down my account with ATT right away.

MDN – Bullshit – their letter wasn’t an apology, it was an explanation. Please change your headline – it’s misleading.

  7. I too was notified by AT&T;last night explaining that my info was hacked. While I am not pleased with AT&T;security, the fact is that companies do have security issues that come up. AT&T;isn’t the first and I doubt they will be the last. I am far more upset with the hackers. You can hack to gather information that you intend to use directly for profit. You can hack to expose and embarrass resulting in publicity and site hits. Either way in my opinion you’re a criminal and should face charges. As their customer I expect AT&T;to fix the security flaw and then go after all persons involved.

  8. The silence of the fanboys.

If this had been Verizon apologizing for a release of droid users information this page would be bleeding with the ubiquitous “MacDailyNews Take” and their giddyness over all non Apple users misfortunes… but here…. silence.

Whats the matter, no stock pumping opportunities today?

  9. @ HughB, @Blim…

Makes me wonder, if fandango replaced ‘Obama’ with ‘Bush’ would you have been as “vocal”?

    Somehow I seriously doubt it!

I’ll gladly apologize if you show a predated post of any blog you follow, tech or otherwise, that bashed Bush and Republicans and you espoused an equal tone of disgust of said comments in your response….

    Still waiting….

  10. Spam Blocker? Just because you haven’t received one doesn’t mean one wasn’t sent.

While you’re probably right about this just being a tempest in the teapot, I did put a watch on my credit card – an ounce of prevention to go into the teapot.

Yep, now that I’ve boiled over in my previous post – I’m feeling much better now. Amazing what walking away from the computer will do.

Let’s hope that none of us are really affected by this incident. Good luck.

    Cheers.

  11. Before Bush was….you know it as a Repugnican….. come on, say it with me: Clinton. The man who crucified Jesus, the man who started the Civil War, the man who had Hitler’s ear. Did Ronnie and Karl give you a reach around? You pathetic cretin.
