Wal-Mart to carry Apple’s iPhone 4 starting June 24; Best Buy, Radio Shack rumored, too

“If you’d rather avoid the lines at Apple and AT&T stores on iPhone 4 launch day, you have options this year,” Erica Ogg reports for CNET.

“Wal-Mart said Friday that it will be one of several retail outlets that will have the iPhone 4 on June 24, its first day of availability anywhere,” Ogg reports. “While Wal-Mart has carried previous versions of the iPhone, this is a first that it will be for sale in its stores on the device’s official launch day.”

Ogg reports, “Wal-Mart is not the only alternative to Apple and AT&T, however. It’s rumored that Best Buy will have the device on launch day, and Radio Shack employees have begun telling customers they have also been selected to carry the device starting June 24.”

  1. yeah… I wanna go to Wally-World to purchase my Apple products !
The place is crawling with folks who (maybe) have seen an Apple product on TV … (a lo-o-ong time ago) ! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />

  2. Eww. Does Apple really want iPhones being sold to those poor, dirty rednecks? It could damage the brand. Then again I’m not sure the mullet wearing, McCain-Palin teabagger class of people who frequent Walmart can afford iPhones in the first place.

  3. Not so true. I was under the same misconception, until I overheard a WM employee giving a very thorough rundown on the iPod to a person trying to make a decision about which MP3 player to buy. He was knowledgeable and balanced, and certainly not a Apple dullard.

Was it a fluke? Don’t know, but certainly way above my expectations.

I expect iPads in WM by Christmas.

  4. ROFL i was at wal-mart once and asked the sales guy about iphone sales, his reply “everybody wants one, but nobody has the credit”. not sure how strong sales will be.

  5. I’d much rather be seen getting a good deal at walmart than spending $5 on a latte at starbucks. Some people are such elitist idiots.

I know many wealthy people who frequent walmart because they are smart about their money an don’t think they are above anyone else just because they have more money

  6. And soon they will be in the 7-11 stores, … So, you can buy them anywhere. The next big thing is being able to use them on any network. That would quiet down the, “What, the iPhone doesn’t work on my network?”

  7. This will be fantastic! I definitely believe Apple will sell more than 10 million iPhone 4s in a quarter (either Q3 or Q4). Apple has never quite reached the 10M mark in a single quarter, although RIM did it last year.

I think the only questions is how fast Apple can sell 10M iPhones. That would be sweet if they can do it in less than 2 months! If they could make enough iPhone 4s to release it across the entire globe on the 24th, I bet they would sell over 10M within 2 months.

  8. Options are always good, especially for those who don’t have an Apple Store in their neck of the woods.

And all you folks who think that Wal-Mart is just for the redneck shoppers — I’ve found things I need there that the local Target or other stores don’t carry, so it saves me the hassle of running around to different stores or ordering online and waiting for my merchandise to show up. It’s not my favorite store by far, but it’s got what I need most of the time and that’s what counts when you’re short on time. They’ve already been selling the 3G and 3GS iPhones, so what’s the big deal?

  9. I just had a violent image of a big fat Wal-Mart regular sitting down and completely destroying the new iPhone 4 in their back pocket.

I threw up a bit in my mouth.

  10. If you are a long term shareholder as i have been for 13 years you want your product to be available to as wide an audience as possible. Everyone knows Apple is a high end brand and deserves its’ respective premium. How can Walmart or Radio Shack harm Apple’s image in any way by being in their electronic departments? Its a logical next step as Apple stores are not accessible to everyone. As Steve said, “Apple is the largest start-up in the world.” This is how you keep the momentum going and grow the company.

  11. I was in Best Buy when the MacBook Pros refresh was introduced and noticed a customer walk up and ask a salesperson about the MacBook. This person was very knowledgeable and helpful, and I doubt the experience could have been better at an Apple Store.

Also, some are expecting sales of 20M+ for the iphone in the first year, and having it available at multiple outlets on the first day helps to serve the considerable numbers that want to get their hands on one without suffering long lines and product outages at just the Apple Stores. Not to mention those with no close Apple Store.

  12. I will never understand people’s hate for Wal-Mart shoppers, especially from the left.
Are they easy to make fun of? Yes.
Does that make them despicable? No.

I’ve also noticed that Wal-Mart has a large number of handicapped employees. Useless people? Apparently not.

Most of the low-income shoppers I see are Democrats (at least in the parts of the South where I travel).
Are y’all really that much better than the ones you profess to be so concerned for?

I understand the hate for the Corporation. I think it is childish, but at least it’s not directed at minorities, immigrants, the poor and destitute. And yes, some really stupid people, too…” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  13. As far as the iPhone is concerned, it won’t be all that cheaper than at the Apple Store. The one advantage I see is that the nearest Apple store is 3 hours from my folks, and Best Buys is two. But the Wal-Mart is just up the street. Like Wally World or not, they’re everywhere.
