The Killer iPhone: How Apple designed iPhone 4 to be sweet to customers and vicious to rivals

“Given how much was known about the fourth-generation iPhone before its official unveiling on June 7, Apple CEO Steve Jobs did quite a job to generate as much as excitement as he did,” Cliff Edwards and Arik Hesseldahl report for BusinessWeek. “Fans and analysts raved over the $199 phone’s videoconferencing feature, applauded its slimmed-down design, and looked forward to a promised new era of hyper-multitasking.”

Edwards and Hesseldahl report, “The new iPhone is built not just to compete with other phones but to keep pushing the boundaries of the Apple universe. It’s Apple at its most creative—and its most aggressive, as it attempts to divert revenue from advertisers, book publishers, and content providers.”

    Good luck with your Evo friends. All the Evo users are in denial right now. They believe it’s better than the iPhone 4, but it will soon be obvious it’s just another cheap iPhone imitation.

  2. Prepare to hear a lot more of the “walled garden” criticism, generated by competitors who are losing. But inside Apple’s mobile “garden” is a place where everything works brilliantly, and the user is the master of their own experience and data. Outside the walls, in the dark, dusty alleys of the so-called open and free environment, predatory advertisers and hackers lurk, spying on their users, often mugging them. The features and functions of the “open” devices are designed by a greedy tug-of-war among OS writers, carriers, and handset makers, mixed with borderline criminals out to exploit the chaotic mess.

  3. I hear people talking about the iPhone 4 all over the place! Seriously. Just walking down the street to get lunch I heard 4 or 5 people talking about it and the 3 ladies behind me in line were also talking about it. Most say they can’t wait to get one.

    Why? Because it’s an admission by Apple observers that the game is already lost in the long run. Unless Apple drastically changes it’s game plan, Android based phones and devices will continue to adapt and innovate at a faster pace than Apple can do in it’s closed universe.

    Amazing how history repeats itself isn’t it?

  8. And once again, all the so-called experts forget the ipod touch.

    The current touch is quite thinner than the 3gs. So much thinner, in fact, that I can see apple redesigning it around the stainless steel frame of the new iphone4. By moving the glass front and back to be flush with the frame, the ipod touch 4(?) would be almost half the thickness of the iphone4.

    Awesome. Apple is the one to pull something like that off.

    I think this puts us only, maybe 5 years from a completely integrated device as thick as two panes of high-strength glass with all the componentry sandwiched between. How thin is too thin? We’ll see.

  9. Yeah, except iOS 4 isn’t 4G yet. It’s funny how you Rotten Apple’s have trouble stepping back and putting things in perspective. Apple is LIGHT YEARS from 4G, and Verizon is not ready to go live in any City with it’s next gen wireless broadband, and even when it does it will be way behind the 8 ball.

    Oh and the iPhone 4’s resolution is more than the human eye can handle. So is that impressive or overkill? Not sure yet. But it’s nice that it caught up on a number of other fronts . . . like multi-tasking for example – something even the shittiest Windows Mobile platform had many years ago.

  10. @JBL, there has been no iPad security breach. There was at AT&T breach. It could just have easily been a breach of left-handed redheads as iPad owners. Not a single bit of data from an iPad has been compromised.

    That said, I love the spin! How is it that it’s simply AT&T;’s fault? Didn’t Apple choose AT&T;to be their exclusive network partner? Didn’t the whole free world know that AT&T;sucked monkey nuts when that deal was announced? Did Jobs and Apple seriously think that AT&T;was suddenly going to blossom into Verizon or have a competent CEO like Dan Hess who has completely reinvented and rebranded Sprint as dollar-for-dollar arguably the best cellular network provider in North America?

    The frustrating thing for people like me is watching major botches by Apple – things like making AT&T;an exclusive network partner and the iPad data breach, or Mac and Safari’s status as the easiest to hack computer and browser in the world . . . and yet none of it ever seems to stick. It’s bizarre. Cult-like. But you’ve heard that before.

    It’s fine to play semantics. It’s a coping mechanism. But the truth is, the average Apple and PC user reads about email addresses and unique numerical ID’s being harvested off of the only 3G network that the iPad is authorized to work on in the US, and when simply signing on and suddenly that $500-$800 they had saved up gets spent elsewhere.

Android is free, so the primary way for Google to make money from Android is to “use its users.” Android users are therefore NOT Google’s customers; they are Google’s “resource” to be exploited, through advertising and collection of user data. Google’s real customers are the advertisers and whoever pays for the user data being collected. Google is primarily motivated make them happy; Android users are secondary, at best.

    Apple’s customers are the people who buy Apple’s hardware/software. Apple is primarily motivated to make their user experience as excellent as possible, in order to sell more hardware. In other words, Apple’s interests are more directly aligned with the user’s interests.

    To be “used” by Google or to be a valued Apple customer? Let’s see… I’ll choose Apple.

    Except of course, the email address data WASN’T harvested off AT&T;’s 3G network, it was stolen of an unsecured AT&T;web server using a brute force script. It’s certainly embarassing for AT&T;, and embarassing to Apple only in that its exclusive US partner continues to fumble. But the iPad device and the 3G network was not involved in the attack at all.
