“Apple has elevated the iPhone brand again and forestalled rivals’ ability to claim parity,” Larry Dignan writes for SeekingAlpha.
MacDailyNews Take: That’s okay, they’ll just continue to run some more insipid Droid TV commercials with meaningless verbiagedesigned to confuse testosterone overdosed ignoramuses. Seriously, watch this absolute stupidity.
Dignan continues, “Now it wasn’t like the iPhone was becoming a commodity device, but you could see some parity on the horizon… Enter Apple CEO Steve Jobs who was having none of that talk… Jobs had many subtle references that indicated that the iPhone was a Mercedes or BMW and the other rivals had more common sedans.”
“Sure, there are plenty of tech specs to ponder, but Apple is selling a different vibe and a higher calling,” Dignan writes. “Now you can debate forever whether you buy into the Apple zeitgeist, but Jobs accomplished what he had to. Apple is about threading that liberal arts and technology needle and the company just put a little more distance between the big pack trying to hunt down the iPhone.”

MacDailyNews Take: Mimicking parrots can’t hunt down the king of the jungle; especially one with a five year head start.
“Apple is about threading that liberal arts and technology needle…”. Everytime I hear this schtick, I want to cringe.
MDN take is good. Those Droid commercials talks like its the most amazing crap out there. Yet they never show the device running through the motion like the iPhone commercials…. Droid, more blah blah, blah blah blah.
Bloodbath! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Actually saw an android phone in the wild last week. First one ever.
Apple needs to keep improving the hardware to keep up, but the most important thing is the OS. The user experience on the iPhone, I think, is superior to other phones.
Droid Does… Phishing Apps.
They need to fuel the Apple hate, so the Hemdroid Google geek squad sheep doesn’t dare to compare their dreck against the iPhone.
Pathetic!
… Mercedes or BMW and the other rivals had more common sedans…
Bad comparison… a common sedan can be a very reliable smooth car.
But that Hemdroid is a POS that doesn’t work, like Windows.
I hate you iphone, hate you, hate you!!!! You make me believe I could be like you some day and I have not even managed to be like the first iphone….
Now, what will the new iPod touch look like? I think it should look like the new iPhone, because the new iPhones look like “throwback” 5G iPods (which I think is a good thing and they also came in shiny black and white). Since the iPhone 4 now has TWO cameras, the touch can have one now. So make it like the iPhone, with the mobile phone, GPS, and user-facing camera parts not present. The difference between an iPod touch and iPhone should be equivalent to the difference between the WiFi iPad and 3G/WiFi iPad.
Obviously why Scott Forstall is in charge of the mobile division, so they can “forestall rivals”.
It’s not like they ever achieved anything close to parity.
All that effort, striving to get some kind of relevance, and today they find there were just skating to where the puck was.
I drink the kool-aid as much as anyone when it comes to Apple. Especially in regards to my Mac vs. PC’s.
But what exactly was announced today that forestalls rivals the ability to claim parity? Feature wise the EVO and iPhone seem awfully close to parity. There will be 2 more Android OS updates this year as well.
I do like the EVO’s ability to do the video chat in WiFi, 3G or 4G rather than WiFi only like the iPhone. I also like how it isn’t just EVO to EVO but can be EVO to anyone that can run Qik or visit the Qik website. I don’t like how it must be iPhone 4 to iPhone 4.
It’s a great upgrade for existing iPhone users to be sure, as well as those that planned to switch anyway. But for those in the States that wouldn’t switch to AT&T;for previous models, there isn’t anything ground breaking enough here to make them bite the bullet.
Why glass on the back though?
The screen sounds awesome. Can’t wait for the comparable iPod Touch!
Tthis is one more example of Apple refusing to rest on its (innumerable) laurels, but pushing forward and dragging the entire industry along with it.
Anyone know what speed the A4 processor in the phone is? Is it the same as the iPad?
@ ken1w – I’d rather see the next iPod touch be just like the iPhone, but no mobile phone bits. Given that FaceTime is WiFi only right now, what if WiFi became ubiquitous? What happens to the cell phone network when they aren’t needed anymore? Could competition from a powerful WiFi device bring them to a less greedy place? Going to an all IP based communications system can’t be all bad.
@JerryT
You seem to be forgetting that app developers can take advantage of the forward-facing camera too. That means Skype, AIM, etc. can build video conferencing into their apps. Boom!
Avoid Droid. iPhone Fail-to-be’s.
@ JerryT – Were you paying attention? FaceTime will be submitted as an open standard, so that anyone can implement it. And you’re on crack if you think the EVO has “feature parity” with the iPhone. Until they can somehow clone iOS completely, that’s crazy talk.
@ El Guapo – Doesn’t scratch as easily as plastic. But I think this thing must be slick as snot on a (glass) doorknob. Glass on the front and back and stainless steel on the sides. The bumper seems like a necessity.
@Tony,
I didn’t forget that app developers can take advantage of the the forward-facing camera. They can do that with the EVO too, it’s an open standard as well.
So I don’t see that feature alone as an Earth shattering feature that would cause people to switch to AT&T;that would not have before.
@Gabriel,
Hey man, I’m the choir…
But as I said, if you wouldn’t switch to AT&T;before, for the previous models, then there is nothing released today that will compel a change.
@ lurker
Regarding speculation about the next iPod touch, I’m considering the need for Apple to keep the manufacturing cost of an iPod touch down (compared to iPhone), because there is no subsidy profit from an iPod touch. Apple could give away iPhones for free and still make a reasonable profit. Yet, Apple needs to keep the cost of the low-end iPod touch close to the (up-front) cost of a $199 iPhone.
I think iPod touch will get a camera this time, but thought the user-facing camera would be one of the differentiators. But you are right that since FaceTime is only for WiFi this year, it makes sense to include it as a feature on iPod touch.
Maybe there will be a $199 16GB model that is basically the current 32GB model (no camera), and the more expensive 32GB and 64GB models will be the iPhone 4 minus phone and GPS parts (but with both cameras).
