Verizon: No iPhone plans in ‘the immediate future’ (with video)

Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors, “In a very brief response to a question from Beet.tv regarding the iPhone, Verizon spokesman John Johnson notes that the company is not planning to carry the iPhone in the “immediate future”, before quickly redirecting the conversation to tout Verizon’s new handset offerings.”

MacDailyNews Take: Imagine having to go to work all day to pimp fake iPhones because your management shortsightedly wanted too much control of their dumb pipes? John probably can’t wait to retire.

  1. Are there any serious rumors as to the who and the when?

I have held off on the iPhone purchase at ATT because they pulled a stunt on one of the families phones early in our contract (luckily before I made the jump to an iPhone). Contract is up and was hoping to jump back to Verizon (where we came from with good service) and get myself an iPhone.

ATT has really left me with the impression they have no class.

  2. What else can Verizon say?

Yea, we’re going to get the iPhone in 6 months? Great, there goes their sales and watch out for Steve. HE wants to announce that agreement.

So, no matter what the reality is, the only thing Verizon can officially say is that it’s not coming in the immediate future.

  3. Although AT&T;offered more money, control was always the bigger issue. Verizon has a “media store” they want us to use instead of iTunes. I think their media store used to be called V-Cast, but nobody knew what it meant. I didn’t anyway.

  4. you know what….i just might, would that shut you up….ps droid can never match up to the user experience and GUI of the iPhone. They can have as many phones as they want, but the droid will only appeal to the younger generation of phone users who are more tech savvy and know what they are doing.

  5. 1. Apple offers the iPhone to Verizon and Verizon says go screw yourself, or something like that.

    2. ATT says they will give Apple whatever control Apple wants. Apple gives them the iPhone.

    3. The iPhone becomes the biggest data hog ever invented. ATT quickly becomes the provider that handles more Data than EVERY OTHER CELL OPERATOR COMBINED.

    4. This obviously makes for some problems for ATT.

    5. Soi the solution is for everyone to call ATT a crap company and wish that Verizon (the hero, somehow) will ride in and save the day.

    6. Idiots!

  6. The widespread rollout of 4G LTE might just be the key for Apple to release the iPhone on Verizon. If so, then the rumor mill will likely go into overdrive towards the end of 2010.

Assuming that Android continues to grow, Apple won’t have as much leverage over Verizon as they did and still have with AT&T. But short term market share or the quick buck has never been Apple’s goal. SJ will put the iPhone and other mobile products on Verizon when it suits him and Apple.

  7. He said they handle the most data of all combined. I responded. And doesn’t the laptop aircard go through the cell tower as data traffic? So ATT handles a lot less ‘overall’ traffic on thier network but more cell phone data. There’s a bragging point. In my simple world, they handle a lot less traffic and have more problems.

  8. I like the ‘something like that’. Here’s the order by year.

    * Proposed to Cingular in early 2005.
    * Proposed to Verizon in mid 2005.
    * First mockups using iPods fall 2005.
    * Engineering design began late 2005.
    * OSX port began January 2006.
    * Exclusive signed with Cingular mid 2006.
    * iPhone first shown to Cingular CEO December 2006.
    * iPhone debut January 2007

Cingular said yes ‘site unseen’. Verizon didn’t want to. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20

Sorry to hear that. I have a family plan with ATT and currently have 3 iPhones on it for 100$ per month for the first phone and $10 each for the other two (plus data fee of course 🙁 ) so I have 3 phones with rollover min (currently over 6000) and free infamilly calling. So I cannot complain really.

NO really. ATT CEO called me and told me that I could not complain. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

    Just a thought,

  10. I don’t understand why people badmouth AT&T;so much. I’ve been using my 3G since December 08 and I really don’t have any complaints. I get service everywhere I go except my ex’s dwelling (I think AT&T;is trying to tell me to stay away) and I rarely drop calls. I don’t have any reason to complain.
