“Much has happened since Apple CEO Steve Jobs last appeared on the D stage,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD. “Then, in May 2007, the iPhone hadn’t yet arrived at market, the app ecosystem was still gestating and the iPad was simply a long-running rumor.”
“So the conversation onstage focused largely on the iPod, iTunes and Apple’s (AAPL) relationship with the music industry, and the forthcoming launch of the iPhone,” Paczkowski reports. “A few months earlier, Jobs had penned a widely read open letter, ‘Thoughts on Music,’ calling on the ‘big four’ music companies to sell their music without digital rights management. Inasmuch as iTunes was already the world’s largest online music distribution system, his thoughts generated quite a bit of discussion–and a fair bit of controversy.”
“Today, the iPhone is nearly three years old. It has sold 50 million units worldwide and the multitouch interface and app ecosystem it pioneered have arguably revolutionized the smartphone industry,” Paczkowski reports. “Today, the iPad is no longer a rumor. Launched just two months ago, it has already sold two million units and seems poised to revolutionize an industry or two of its own. And today, Jobs is once again shaking up industry with another open letter, ‘Thoughts on Flash,’ a withering rumination on Adobe’s Flash platform and the future of online video.”
MacDailyNews Take: And in three years, we’ll laugh that sites once used Flash to deliver video online.
Paczkowski reports, “Much has changed in three years. But one thing has remained constant: Apple, under Jobs, continues to drive innovation in every industry it touches.”
In a few hours Jobs will once again take the D stage for the opening session of D8. Join AllThingsD at 6pm PT for live coverage here.
Steve-Steve-Steve!
What live link? I don’t see one.
Prediction. Apple TV mentioned last meeting at this conference as a “hobby” will make its debut.
I don’t see it either. It’s currently a link to the original article.
I’m thinking that the page will begin to update as the event oves forward.
moves. Sorry.
Do you think it will be visible from our iPads?
Live link is at top of the D8 Section tab/page.
Looking forward to it.
By the way…
Despite all the ‘kill Flash’ talk, there are no less than 7 Flash banners on this page.
I only noticed once I had installed ClickToFlash.
What gives??
Maybe it goes live at just before 6PM Pacific Time. Here’s the link that says “LIVE NOW”
http://d8.allthingsd.com/?mod=D8skybox
I’m watching it but…I can’t hear it. Why, I wonder, is 75% of all online video way too damned quiet on my MacBook Pro Intel, OSX 10.6.3 and also is, on my other machines.
And yes, I’ve checked my System Prefs settings. I’m no newbie.
BTW Jobs looks healthier. Great.
LIVE doesn’t mean LIVE. It means the D8 page is live with new material such as transcripts and video clips. There won’t be a live stream of D8.
“Ecosystem” Ugh! That’s such a MFST word.
There wont be any announcements on this… He is just going to provide insight and defend his claims that flash is like the floppy…
The operating strategy for the tech industry these days is, wait until Apple does something, then work really hard to copy it. Compared to Apple, the rest of the tech is generally pretty pathetic. Has Apple become the R&D;department for the whole tech sector?
I’m sure they will all be listening closely to what Steve Jobs says tonight, and next week.
From Digital 8’s Adam Tow:
We won’t be doing a live stream, but we will be posting video clips from the session later tonight. And yes, they will be viewable on the iPad.
Our live blog will be updating on the iPad. Bookmark this page and enjoy starting at 6pm!

Steve says they sell 3 iPads a second. That would be over 54 Million plus 2 for a total of 56 Million sold this year. So we’re looking at some really strange projections ranging from 6 million to 56 million. I give up. This doesn’t make sense.
Some video is up now at http://d8.allthingsd.com/20100601/d8-video-steve-jobs-on-flash-adobe-and-other-technology-apple-doesnt-use-anymore/
@FutureMedia, in the video, Steve says they’ve sold 1 every 3 seconds since they launched the iPad, which is about right.
