Apple now worth nine times Dell’s market value

On October 6, 1997, in response to the question of what he’d do if he was in charge of Apple, Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell stood before a crowd of several thousand IT executives and answered flippantly, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.”

A little more than a month later, on November 10, 1997, new Apple Interim CEO (iCEO) Steve Jobs responded, speaking in front of an image of Michael Dell’s bulls-eye covered face, “We’re coming after you, you’re in our sights.”

On January 13, 2006, after a little more than eight years of hard work, Apple Inc. passed Dell, Inc. in market value, $72.13 billion vs. $71.97 billion at market close, respectively.

• 7X:On January 26, 2010, Apple gained $7.57 to $210.64 to hit a market value of $189.72 billion or more than 7 times that of Dell’s current $27.03 billion.

Apple is also a debt-free company and currently has significantly more cash and short-term investments on-hand ($41.7 billion) than Dell Inc. is worth.

  1. Unfortunately, since most corporate and government IT are still either addicted to or stuck on Windoze, and HP and Gateway suck SOOO much more, they resort to ordering Dell still.

  2. @ tomL,

“Dell, the Studebaker of computer manufacturers.”

As the proud former owner of a ’55 Studebaker Hawk, I resent that comparison.

“Dell, the Yugo of computer manufacturers.”

There, I fixed it for you.

  3. I tell my clients that to rise from the quality of Dell to Apple is a distance so great that it requires a decompression chamber, and they laugh. Then I show them my MacBook Pro up against their Inspiron and they stop laughing. A quarter of them have already made the switch, and are almost giddy from leaving Windows behind once and for all. I mean, really! They smile and laugh like they just took a big hit of B.C. Chronic. I find it all terribly amusing…

  4. Well if my little anecdote is indicative of the industrywide onslaught by Apple, here it is. I am typing now on a Dell Latitude E6500. Guess what? TODAY our IT department received my MacBook Pro. I work for a public agency… and yes they finally decided to officially purchase Macs. Tomorrow, I will be typing on the MacBook Pro. Now I can use at the office what I use at home. Our IT director puts it this way: “I think it will cost us less to maintain the Mac. Let’s go for it.”

  5. Why Dell failing? They was using Windows! Now Apple showed the world true quality! Who would want to go back to a Dell? Now HP is next because the screwed off 1.2 Billion Dollars to buy Palm WebOS and thought they get key architect of it and they got screwed when Google scoop him up. actually Two top dogs will be Apple and Google.

  6. My favorite story is about Michael Dell giving his keynote at Las Vegas CES, 2007. A few minutes into his speech, the ceiling of the darkened auditorium began to light-up. . . . It seems all the press guys who made the mistake of attending CES instead of Macworld (held the same week that year) were answering their phones. Steve Jobs was introducing the iPhone in his Keynote, hundreds of miles away, in San Francisco.

    Is there some justice there?

  7. F Michael Dell he is a TOTAL PUTZ! He got LUCKY! He did DIDDLY SQUAT for computer innovation. Nothing but a Wall Street Hyped black box PUSHER!!! I am FORCED to use their )$&! on a daily basis……. Of the 22 Dells we have here….. OVER HALF have gone bad… Bad power supplies, bad logicboards, REALLY PATHETIC Monitors… I can not tell you how many hard drives have gone bad.. COUNTLESS…. The keyboards stick…. AND IF THAT IS NOT BAD ENOUGH I HAVE TO RUN Windoze on this pathetic PC O CRAP!!!

People think Apple has people drinking Kool-Aid???? GMAFB! Dells hardware SUCKS!!! I KNOW I use it evey day. The Blind leading the blind around here. The management is to PROUD to listen to legitimate reasoning… Like TCO. They have had a  NEW Dell server in her for over 1 month and they are having ALL KINDS of issues deploying the thing!!!!! That’s ONE SERVER!!! WE EVEN HIRED IN OUTSIDE HELP!!! THE EXPERTS!!! AND THEY CAN’T get the thing to play nice!!!!!

All I can say is SOME PEOLPLE YOU JUST CANT REACH!

Dell is a PATHETIC JOKE… Always has been. CHEAP! CRAPWARE!
You get what you pay for… And You get CRAP from DELL.

A side note… It is amazing to hear folkes WHINE about how much an iMac cost… Or for that matter ANY Apple laptop or computer…. HELLO!!! why don’t they bitch about the ABUSIVE Dollar figure on Adobe’s Creative Suite?

Dell owners ARE BY FAR the worst offenders of software piracy…. They are CHEAP sniveling misinformed SCHMUCKS!!! The Dell ineptness is MIND BLOWING!!! But then again I hear that IGNORANCE IS BLISS.

Yeah Just like the IGNORANT and may I ad ARROGANT Michael Dell.

Eat your words loser boy. Go join the monkey boy Ballmer. There is a seat waiting for you right next to him……you should have much to talk about over these past ten years in tech… Or maybe you haven’t noticed due to your companies lack of innovation and above all you arrogant ignorance. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Have a nice day. AAPL Long.

  8. And by the end of the year it will be 10X the worth of Dell. It’s almost gotten boring just to hear this. Dell isn’t moving at all. I’m sure Dell will say that market cap doesn’t mean anything so what difference does it make.

  9. Micheal has had his time of fame. It’s ok. He can retire now with the feeling of having done something in his life.
    All things must pass…
    Time has no master.

  10. AAPL keeps going up while the overall market keeps going down. AAPL up 1.53% today. NASDAQ down 1.54%. It’s a flight to quality. Ever since the news about Apple surpassing Microsoft’s market cap entered public consciousness, I think more typical investors are seeing AAPL as a safe bet compared to other stocks.

  11. If you r humble you go long way. Mr Dell was proudy to make comments. He cost $45.68billian ($71.97b in Jan 2006 to $26.29b on 1 June 2010) to his shareholders. Instead of cleaning somebody’s …… , he would be better off cleaning his …. and winding up his own company and return money to his shareholders. LOOK AT WHERE U R AND WHERE MR jOBS IS!!!!

  12. Ha! Ha! That idiot Dell speaking out of his arrogant ass back then. Sure he’s rich. He wouldn’t have to work another day of his life. Good for him. But it’s hilarious that he’s labeled himself from now on as a fool.
