Microsoft admits Windows Phone 7 slide was wrong; IDC never predicted 30m devices

“Microsoft acknowledged on Friday that it used an inaccurate number to represent research company IDC’s sales forecast for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 platform,” By Stephen Lawson reports for IDG.net.

“During a presentation at the ReMix conference in Paris this week, Microsoft showed a slide that said IDC had forecast 30 million Windows Phone 7 devices would be sold by the end of 2011,” Lawson reports. “The MobileTechWorld blog posted a photo of the French-language slide.”

Lawson reports, “As it turns out, IDC had said no such thing about the future operating system, on which many observers believe Microsoft’s mobile-phone future depends. Instead, the research company forecast 2011 sales of 32 million devices running all Windows mobile operating systems. This includes expected sales of devices with Windows Mobile 6.5, which is already on the market. IDC has not given any sales estimate for Windows Phone 7, which Microsoft has said will be available in the fourth quarter.”

“‘At the ReMix conference in Paris, Microsoft presented a slide projecting the number of Windows Phone 7 [devices] to be sold in 2011. This slide was inaccurate, and intended to represent an analyst’s assessment of the market opportunity,’ Microsoft said in a prepared statement. The company added that it has not provided any sales forecasts of its own for the OS,” Lawson reports.

  1. I love the fact that they claim to be so enterprise friendly. Must be the same program that BP is using to calculate how much oil has been pumped into the Gulf so far. Why don’t they just preempt every press release with “Now don’t hold us to this, but…”

  2. Whomever wrote the original article sure doesn’t know what they are talking about,or maybe they do. Mac OSX only runs on Macintosh computers. So maybe that part of their prognostication will be correct. However OSX runs all of Apple’s mobile devices. So IDC is comparing Macs to phones. Very useful analysis.

  3. actually 30 million is very doable because of the fact that they will have a lot more phones running the OS from Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC ect. Though I cant understand why they are keeping the current version or who would by it, it’s so bad. The new one has some good stuff but we’ll see

  4. The phone market is huge, so it’s possible they’ll reach that (with WinMo overall). But the problem is that they’re in 4th place and becoming more irrelevant.

The enterprise-friendly story doesn’t hold either. The MS Exchange and Windows Server groups have their own agenda and they’ll enable any mobile platform — to heck with WinMo.

As far as the blown PowerPoint, I imagine some poor MS sap read the data optimistically and made a simple mistake. If I worked at MS, I might put up a mental coping shield around reality too.

  5. Oh my god. Why does Steve Jobs suck so much dick? I seriously can’t see why this man feels he must REGULATE everything that happens in every little part of the Apple spectrum. Seriously. Also, this site is full of goddamn horses asses. This is like the Fox News of Apple news/fansites.

  6. @Apple Really Sucks

    Agree with that last sentence.

If Steve Jobs drank puppy blood, MDN would be right there defending him saying he “does it for his own health” and it’s “good for him”.

  7. @Apple Really Sucks and Nick 1693:

So, what brings you two here (besides Trolling). Slow day on the MicroSloth fanboy sites? Not much exciting news there eh? Don’t worry, we understand.

  8. “Well, I’m not trolling. Sorry I agree with someone.”

Well, if you’re going to apologize, you should at least wipe up some of that warm, young blood. Basenji?

  9. @ MacRaven

The “trolls” come here to vent because there’s nothing to get excited about in the rest of the tech world. In that respect, MDN is providing a very valuable service… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  10. My god you people are idiots.

I wasn’t and I am not trolling, but you people are CRAZIES.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Mac, but not to the extent you people will think everyone is wrong just because Apple did someone.

And what’s wrong with puppy blood? I hear that it cures all sorts of ills and is much more efficacious than kitten blood.

Seriously, you are that upset about some Mac users and Apple advocates dissing on Win Mobile? I’ll admit that people sometimes go over the top in defending or promoting Apple and its products, but the posts in this thread are quite tame and nothing to get excited about.

I think that you missed a few scheduled doses of Prozac, buddy.

I wasn’t and I am not trolling, but you people are CRAZIES.”

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

    trolling (v.),
    1. Being a prick on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks because it’s the internet and hey, you can.
    2. Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards.

. . . At least have the cojones to admit it. And baby seal blood is much more effective.

  13. @iAppleTennisU:-) :

“Don’t Trust msft!!! Don’t buy fro them!
    What a joke they are!!!”

Must be using that awesome spell check feature you guys have in IE.

  14. Told you so:

    Microsoft INVENTED ’30 million’ devices.

    Was it an error?

Knowing this history of Microsoft: I seriously doubt this was any error. Jackasses. If you can’t compete: Lie, cheat, steal or FUD.

    MICROSOFT CAN’T COMPETE.
