AdMob: Twice as many iPhone OS devices vs. Android in U.S.; 3.5 times as many worldwide

AdMob today released the April edition of thier “AdMob Mobile Metrics Report,” the company’s monthly look at the data flowing through their ad network.

MacDailyNews Note: It’s important to note that this data is from AdMob’s network only. For one example, we switched from AdMob to Quattro Wireless when Apple bought Quattro, so iPhone OS visitors to our site and, in fact, millions upon millions of iPhone OS visitors to sites using Quattro and other mobile ad networks are not measured by AdMob.

In this month’s report AdMob take a look at unique Android and iPhone devices in their network. The chart below compares unique Android and iPhone devices for the US and worldwide. In the US, there were 10.7 million iPhone devices compared to 8.7 million Android devices. If you include the iPod touch, the gap between platforms increases to 2 to 1 in the US.

Internationally, the iPhone platform has significantly more unique devices than Android in the AdMob network. The ratio of iPhone OS devices to Android devices was 3.5 to 1. The report breaks out the geographic distribution of the devices in more detail; 75% of Android devices are in the North America, compared to 49% of iPhone OS devices.

MacDailyNews Take: Android is a U.S. creature that was spawned by Apple’s iPhone exclusive with AT&T. Elsewhere, Google’s Android lives off Apple’s table scraps, if it lives at all. Google’s exposure is dramatic; Android doesn’t have much of a footing anywhere else. The minute Apple iPhone goes to multiple carriers in the U.S., is the minute Google slips off the face of the cute little hill that they’ve built for themselves, because non-AT&T U.S. customers will have no reason to settle for fake iPhones when they can get the real thing.

  1. Silverwarloc, not really. There have been a lot of upgrades in those iPhone sales. iPhone has almost reached it’s limit on AT&T;. It needs other carriers in the U.S. To start growing marketshare.

  2. Apple is NOT in a race with Android. Android wants to be on as many handsets as possible, profit be damned. Apple wants to maximize revenue and profit. Market share is not the primary goal.

  3. It’s clear by those numbers that Android is only gaining traction in the U.S., which just so happens to be one of the last countries that Apple has an exclusive carrier agreement. Once Apple goes to Verizon and/or Sprint and/or T-Mobile, Android will get squashed like everywhere else in the world.

  4. I too vote for Apple releasing the CDMA iPhone and releasing iPhones to all carriers as soon as possible. Android is getting a foothold, and their followers are viciously anti-Apple.

I have long had a no data cap tetherable “smartphone” (WM6) on Verizon and am biding my time until something better comes along. I’ll be very happy with any iPhone on any carrier other than AT&T;.

But note that I’ve been making do with a Windoze phone for years now, and the Android doesn’t look all that bad to my eyes (I have no actual iPhone experience)

  5. Apple has to open up to other carriers to build even more momentum. Google is the second coming of Microsoft, and they did a pretty good job showing off their new OS at their developers conference. If there was no iPhone, I’d consider an Android phone, simply because everything else out there completely sucks. But buyers want iPhones, and the more iPhones, the more iPads, and the more Macs – not even in that particular order. Give people the opportunity to buy iPhones from Verizon, Sprint, etc. and no one will catch up to Apple, not even Googley.

  6. The only place iPhone is 1 carrier locked is there in US … anywhere in the world is open. and also Tether !! so only you guys are screwed … sorry. UK have tether and multi carriers since announced. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> good luck, have fun

  7. Forget Verizon –
Has everyone forgot that lame Verizon CEO that said Apple would be groveling to be on Verizon and that the iPhone would be meaningless.
And don’t forget if wasn’t for AT&T;taking a leap of faith in Apple/Jobs there wouldn’t be the innovation we now see. In fact, Verizon would have limited everything we can now do with the iPhone.
    How soon everyone forgets.

  8. I would say some of their followers are anti-iPhone, but most aren’t. We’ve got to remember that most people don’t care. Us geeks are in the minority getting hyped about this stufff. Out of the three Android users I know… two switched back to iPhone (cuz Android isn’t there yet) and the other got Android cuz their carrier didn’t have iPhone. None of them lost any sleep.

  9. These figures make me wonder how that other company (was it NPD?) made the claim that Android devices had surpassed iPhone in the US. I too believe that once iPhone spreads to other carriers in the US, the number of iPhones will increase even more dramatically.

  10. This is not a measure of how many are out there. This is a measure of how many ads are viewed. A million guys like me could be using Android phones without noticeably showing up on those charts. That isn’t how we use our phones. My Mac-loving son has a Pre, my PC-accepting daughter an iPhone … never seen either surf.

  11. T-Mobile embraced Android before AT&T;did. T-Mobile profits have been disappointing ever since. This is sad because they arguably offer the best customer service and best pricing of all US carriers.

    iPhone 4 + T Mobile please!!!!!!
