U.S. Congressional Democrats to consider updating telecommunications law

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Democrats in the U.S. House and Senate said they will consider proposals starting next month to update the law that regulates telephone, cable and broadcast companies,” Todd Shields reports for Bloomberg.

“The lawmakers will begin ‘a process to develop proposals’ to revise the 1934 telecommunications act, which was last rewritten in 1996, they said today in an e-mailed statement,” Shields reports. “Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, chairman of the Commerce Committee, and Representative Henry Waxman, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, are among those involved in the process, according to the statement.”

“A U.S. court in April said the Federal Communications Commission lacks power over Comcast Corp.’s Web practices, sparking debate over the agency’s power to regulate Internet service providers,” Shields reports. “FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski on May 6 asserted authority under a part of the act written for telephone networks. Republican lawmakers said he improperly sought to expand regulation.”

Shields reports, “Today, 74 House Democrats in a letter told Genachowski they have ‘serious concerns’ about his proposed regulatory framework and urged him to await ‘additional direction from Congress.'”

  1. “We’re seeing the reality of a lot of the North Pole starting to evaporate, and we could get to a tipping point. Because if it evaporates to a certain point – they have lanes now where ships can go that couldn’t ever sail through before. And if it gets to a point where it evaporates too much, there’s a lot of tundra that’s being held down by that ice cap.” – Henry Waxman, April, 2009.

Note to voters: When you mistakenly elect a total fool, you’re not supposed to re-elect him/her/it. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

  2. Hey, HughBaby . . . the above article IS political, hence all of the following reactions to it! What could you possibly not understand about that?

And you call HIM an idiot? Good googly-moogly.

  3. Apparently the government is trying to find ways to stop the discourse on conspiracy theories. One such idea is to have pop ups come up with different points of view.

What a mistake it was to elect Obama…

  4. Henry Waxman: “If someone is so fearful that they are going to start using their weapons to protect their rights, it makes me very nervous that these people have weapons at all.”

Talk about missing the point. Stupid bastard.

  5. Okay, we admit it: We screwed up. We don’t pay attention and we pick candidates by how well they play on TV, not based on their experience and philosophies.

We’re also easily swayed by SNL, Comedy Central, and Oprah. Hey, what can we say, we don’t have much in the way of mental faculties.

That’s why, while most of us do lean conservative, we’ll vote against that in a heartbeat if the guy plays a saxophone on Arsenio or looks good reading off his teleprompter.

Next time, instead of smartly not voting because we’re hopelessly uninformed simpletons, we’re just going to vote out the Democrats since they seem to have lost the plot so entirely, they actually made even us pay some attention.

  6. @Ignorant Swing Voters

    Speak for yourself Mr. Ignorant.
Obama will be in office for another 6+ years trying to clean up the mess the right wing created. Enjoy your hate, it’s only going hurt yourself.
Oh by the way, nice job Bush and Cheney did letting the oil companies operate without regulation. Louisiana, Alabama, and the Pan handle of Florida are all F*cked for year to come. They voted Red before and they’ll do it again. Amazing how many people will vote against their own interest in this country

  7. You must be living off my paycheck.

Just so you know, it wasn’t just Bush, it goes as back far as CARTER. You know that mistake we would like to forget but can’t cuz his policies have been great for the past few decades. Yeah we here in the panhandle are F*cked because we have an administration that was afraid once again to take a good stance and force BP to plug the hole, but hey money contributions and the great P.R. can solve it all remember. I’m pretty sure I will taxed more for this clean up and still support your ass.

As for Waxman and Company, back off, you’re barking up the wrong tree in trying to get more control. Why don’t you instead allow for more competition in every area to get prices down. More competition is better for the customers, because then WE can choose what provider suits us best.

  8. @ Artist

People are not voting against their own interests but they are quite possibly voting against what you think is in their best interest though.

Oh, and just out of curiousity, do you have any idea what B.P. gave Obama in the last election?

And you think the oil companies owned Bush huh?

  9. @ zzzzzzzzzz
No, I think Oil companies and Bush/Cheney are one and the same.
I also think that Obama has done a terrible job on the clean up. The government should have taken over from the start and bill BP later. I also thing that BP top brass should be in jail and charged with Negligent Homicide!!

  10. So much hate between compatriots, what’s wrong with you guys?

Who ever codes an app / plug in that substitutes a political comment or whatever words, terms, expression the user decides to tag to filter out.

Just set the “word” filter in the app preferences and replace comments and only those comments with … I don’t know …anything, maybe selected passages from Milton, Tennyson, Li Bai, Mary Barnard, William Blake or W Wordsworth?

Or random quotes from Fawlty Towers (Flowery Twats) or Mork and Mindy.
