“We’ve heard that Apple has stopped shipping iPhone 3G 8GB units to AT&T stores and orders are not being placed for the device,” The Boy Genius reports.
The Boy Genius wonders, “Could this mean we might see the iPhone 3GS drop to $99 and make way for a new model… or disappear altogether?”

Hmmmm. It can’t do everything that iPhone OS 4 can do.
It’s underpowered.
It’s an older model.
Is it really surprising that it’s being quietly discontinued?
To be expected.
Backfilling the $99 slot in the lineup with the iPhone 3GS at the release of the iPhone 4G makes sense to me. It is consistent with Apple’s approach in the past.
They have to drop the 8GB sizes. Apple already stated that the new iPhone OS does not fit in the 3G 8GB iPhone.
The lesson here is to always buy up in RAM of new devices. I am sure someone could make a USB memory stick to attach to the older 8GB 3G iPhones.
Makes sense if you need 3GS minimum to take advantage of most of iPhone OS 4.0; 8GB is a decent entry level model though so I hope they keep that.
Apple is making a killing. I’m sure they can make the 16gb the new entry level model.
