Nokia’s press release follow, verbatim:
Global strategic alliance enables industry leaders to leverage strengths in e-mail, instant messaging, maps and navigation across PC and mobile devices
New York, NY, USA – Today, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance to extend the reach of their industry leading online services and offer people rich experiences that keep them connected to their world and the world around them.
Building on more than five years of collaboration, Nokia and Yahoo! will leverage each others’ strengths in e-mail, instant messaging and maps and navigation services, to provide consumers with access to world-class experiences on both PC and mobile devices.
As part of the alliance:
– Nokia will be the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo! properties, branded as “powered by Ovi.”
– Yahoo! will become the exclusive, global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as “Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!”
– Nokia and Yahoo! plan to work on ID federation between their services, beginning by making it easy for people to use their Ovi user IDs across select Yahoo! properties to easily access the online content and services they need.
“Delivering great user experiences — both online and on your mobile – is what this alliance is all about,” said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia. “We’re enabling millions of Yahoo! customers in key markets including North America to discover the unique capabilities that Ovi Maps brings.
Similarly, Yahoo!’s online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile.”
“What a combination,” said Carol Bartz, CEO, Yahoo!. “We’re excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo! users. At the same time, we believe Nokia’s strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business.”
Together, Yahoo! and Nokia will continue to deliver compelling Internet experiences that address the core needs of consumers, developers, operators and advertisers. The companies will utilize their respective global distribution advantages and brand recognition across consumer audiences.
Select, co-branded service offerings are expected to become available from the second half of 2010, with global availability expected in 2011.

Pfffttt! Another non-event.
I bet Steve is shaking in his boots….. Not ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
They’ve already been at it together for 5 years and they’re going to do what now?
Oh vee are soooo stupid
Partnerships don’t mean jack until these people understand the concept of making a device work for the end user, not the other way around.
Gotta love it when the lame ones combine… Thinking they won’t be lame anymore. Good luck with that.
Even worse, the amount of bureaucracy involved will result in them creating a complete turd.
Here’s the mathematical breakdown in terms of mass/volume:
1 Turd + 1 Turd = 1 Bigger Turd.
It’s like two badly angled tentpoles trying to prop each other up – they won’t be very stable or sturdy, and shouldn’t be too hard to knock over.
Yahooovi services:
email – eeeeyalp
IM – ouwyee
maps – ivooshy
apps – aaayyah
Google should be concerned. Right.
That’s like Chrysler joining up with Yugo to kick some Toyota ass!
As in, ain’t gonna happen. Two has-beens.
I remember when iPhone launched and Yahoo was the partner with push email. That was 3 years ago.
So, Nokia has already partnered with Microsoft to bring Mobile Office to its handsets, and now Yahoo! is going to bring email and search. Two also-rans, and one market leader that acts like an also-ran. Now there’s an exciting combination.
Nokia is a freaking joke. We got bigger fish to fry.
NEWS FLASH:
Schwinn looks to take on Ferrari with new TaterTots partnership.
Who won’t Yahoo parner with? First Microsoft, now Nokia?
I switched to Yahoo search on my iPod touch. I don’t like it.
These kinds of efforts surfaced with the iPod/iTunes, the idea like we have to be a part of this, or we can’t just let Apple have this. The landscape is littered with the broken remains of Apple device killers.
“…???? looks to take on Apple…”
Really, Again? don’t you people get tired of trying to “Take on Apple”? and building Apple product “Killers”??? come on, why don’t this people start making apple products accessories, or build they own category, or look where is a technological hole that they can fill. Why is it that every company wants to take on apple? they never learn from their mistakes.
Yahoo is such a joke, and their email product especially is.
Even though Yahoo offers “Push” email for the iPhone, Yahoo doesn’t offer Desktop IMAP email like GMail or AOL do through your choice of Client. With Yahoo, you’re stuck with POP on the Desktop, that you have to pay for! POP is just flat out stupid when you have a mobile device.
It’s ridiculous. I couldn’t take it anymore, so I kicked Yahoo to the curb… Good riddance and I’m never going back.
Good choice Nokia!
What is it with tech companies and announcing “partnerships” as if it’s some major event. To me, it just makes the two companies (separately) look too weak and ineffective to be competitive and relevant, so how a partnership? Maybe that will placate the shareholders for a while longer…
Obviously, Apple has many partnerships, such as with suppliers of parts and manufacturers, even Google and the music labels. But most of Apple’s partnerships are incidental to Apple’s core strategies, NOT the core of the actual half-baked strategies.
The word “leverage” always triggers my bs detector.
“1 Turd + 1 Turd = 1 Bigger Turd.”
So true! Made my day!
LMAO.
This just means the Nokia users coming to US will not find themselves in a black hole.
Nokia & Yahoo… woohoo! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
A bunch of yahoos, to be sure.
