New York Yankees ban Apple iPads at stadium

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“This weekend is an exciting one here in NYC – the Subway Series comes to Citi Field,” Allen Stern reports for CenterNetworks. “The matchup is between the Mets and the Yankees.”

Stern reports, “However if you are planning to attend a Yankees home game at Yankee Stadium, leave that iPad at home! The security policies page notes that laptops are not allowed inside Yankee Stadium along with any video equipment. Apparently Yankees Stadium officials have decided that the iPad poses a safety risk… Check out this story of a woman who attempted to bring her iPad into Yankee Stadium.”

Stern reports, “Apparently iPads are welcome at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox… One might think the MLB would want devices like the iPad to be used while at the game.”

MacDailyNews Note: Yeah, especially with apps like ESPN iScore Baseball Scorekeeper (US$9.99) and At Bat 2010 for iPad (US$14.99) available.

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, even after giving Johnny Damon the heave ho, The Yankees aren’t too smart. Comparing them to the Red Sox just isn’t fair. Perhaps the MLB itself, which has consistently made the very best major league sports apps for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, will intervene in order to get iPad admittance into the Stankee’s history-free bandbox.

  1. What’s the risk? I’m guessing that they fear someone with a laptop may do a live feed of the game? Someone tell them to ban smartphones then, but keep the iPad since it has no camera.

  2. “The security policies page notes that laptops …” THIS IS GREAT! Are they going to start counting the iPad as a computer? It talks to bluetooth keyboards and soon printers just like a personal computer. If a PC that is assembled into a cash register, scale, time clock, lab equipment, … is counted as a PC, so should the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch!

So, what is Apple’s PC REAL market share!

  3. silly to ban the iPads…just use your iPhone instead…they banning iPhones too?

On the Damon comment – and as a NYY fan – I fully agree. That was a far worse move.

  4. red sox: 7 world series titles* + iPad usage
yankees: 27 world series titles + iPhone usage

i will happily forgo the extra screen real estate to see the BETTER team. still can see all you “really need to see” on mlb iPhone app.

*note: only 2 titles since 1918 (ie before your grandmother was born)… and pedroia is a punk.

  5. From the Stadium Security Policy:
“Any other devices that may interfere with and/or distract any sports participant, other patron, audio or audio/visual telecast or recording of the game or any technology-related service provided in Yankee Stadium”

Pull out that iPad and you’d have all the rows behind you distracted.

  6. What better way to fill out the game scorecard than with an iPad app and plus access to other goings on baseball while watching the game. It makes the experience that much more better.
