Report: Apple orders up 10 million CDMA iPhones

“Pegatron Technology has received orders for an iPhone based on CDMA from Apple with annual shipments expected to reach 10 million units,” Monica Chen and Willie Teng report for DigiTmes.

“The orders should start contributing to the Taiwan-based company’s revenues in August or September, according to sources from component makers,” Chen and Teng report.

Chen and Teng report, “Pegatron has declined to comment on the report.”

“Spun off from Asustek Computer’s manufacturing arm in 2008, Pegatron has continued to be hampered by the uncertainties regarding the group’s separation of own-brand and contract manufacturing businesses,” Chen and Teng report.

  1. OK…I plead ignorance on this… Anyone know the facts on the following question?

Does AT&T;HAVE any CDMA capability or are they ONLY GSM?

    second question

If this report is true does this suggest that Verizon is about to get the iPhone?

  2. CDMA is Verizon. (ATT and Tmobile are GSM.) I’m not sure what Sprint is but I’m pretty sure it’s not CDMA.

CDMA runs on a lower frequency than GSM so each tower covers more area and can penetrate deeper into buildings. It’s part of the reason that Verizon’s coverage is better than ATT overall.

The drawback is that maximum speeds are lower, although I don’t think most consumers will care about that.

If the rumor is true, it could only mean that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. I don’t think Sprint even has 10 million customers left. =P

  3. All this does is get people’s hopes up. Everyone know it’s Verizon spreading these rumors to stop the hemoraging of defectors for the iPhone. It’s for the people who are ready to jump ship to get the iPhone that are not willing to deal with “just ok” phones, its for them to hold on a little longer. Apple will never comment on this why even ask them about future products, you know the answer. All these companies want to be associated with Apple somehow, even in a rumor, because it raises their stock and brings publicity. this just last year again leading to WWDC and the year before.

All i’m saying is don’t get your hopes up. Don’t get mad at Apple for not providing Verizon an iPhone they tried that, didn’t work. Apple isn’t your normal company that just thinks about pure profits, the have a different outlook on how to make money. It’s not always about hitting every freaking market. I don’t think Apple would send a whole to team to work with AT&T;to better the network and the iPhone experience.
