Mossberg: Flash is proprietary to Adobe, not open; developing for multiple platforms is nothing new

Below, Alan Murray and Walt Mossberg discuss lazy ingrate Adobe’s disingenuous ad campaign which quixotically attempts to paint their proprietary Flash retail product as “open” and Apple’s insistence on actual open standards such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript as “closed.”

  1. I’m glad someone is finally trying to put the word ‘proprietary’ into its rightful context and definition. People throw that term around too loosely, and mostly in an incorrect fashion.

    Walt’s right, Flash is most definitely proprietary as is Windows as is OSX as is almost everything.

  2. Bad modern journalism 101: have guests make interesting points, establish basics of the story, and then before anyone can actually explain anything of importance, cut to meaningless bullshit that isn’t even interesting enough for a byline in an ad.

    Balance is not journalism. Not evertything has two sides. Some only have one (science vs uninformed opinion) and others have multiple POVs ( Apple vs Adobe). No one watching that video learned anything if they didn’t already know the story. No one really explained how disengenuous it is for a closed, proprietary near web monopoly company to call themselves “open”, or even what any of those terms mean.

  3. Adobe would have to completely open-source Flash for them to have any chance of being taken seriously by their target audience.

    Of course, if they did that, then their huge acquisition of Macromedia will have been for naught, as they wouldn’t be able to overcharge for the Flash tools they sell.

  6. Even if they made it open-source, I still don’t want Flash pre-installed on my Mac, iPad, iPhone or anything else. Unless I specifically choose to install it and am allowed to turn it on and off myself as I deem necessary, then no thanks, not on my hardware. As a matter of fact, a little blame is shared by Apple on this one in my opinion as I should already be able to turn Flash off just as easily as you can Java in the browser, and yet you can’t (mercifully, ClickToFlash does let you).

    The dirty little secret of why so many businesses still use Flash is because unlike browser cookies, which are easy to dump, Flash cookies are very persistent and imho purposely made difficult to find and trash. Legal maybe, but highly unethical in my opinion at the very least and a strong argument against even using Flash at all that I’m surprised is not brought up more often.

    I also recall one of the recents security articles I read said that the favorite browser hacking targets of hackers were Flash and Acrobat and that Adobe’s record on security for both was abysmal. That alone should also make anyone think twice about using either.

    The ultimate irony of course is that the software Adobe wants installed (mobile Flash) doesn’t even exist, just unreliable, half-baked software that doesn’t even provide most of the desktop flash “experience” (sarcasm mine) people think they’ll be getting in a mobile Flash. Not to mention of course that since it isn’t optimized for any hardware it will simply chew up batteries so fast no one will want to use it once they have it anyway. Apple sees it for the dead end it now is. Adobe is in denial.

  7. @JoshtheiMacGuy – only the cr@p apps like Flash and virtually everything Microsoft (except Flight Simulator).

    Adobe is a company. They paid billions for Macromedia, and the value of that investment appears to be plummeting as Apple pushes web developers towards HTML 5. That’s what the fuss is about – money and influence. That’s pretty much what it is always about. All of the talk about “open” and “proprietary” is intended to manipulate your opinion to their benefit. The problem for Adobe is that many people like Apple products, and a good number of them seem to actually like Apple as a company, as well. Few consumers seem to be fanatical about Adobe. If they even know the name of the company, it is probably only because of Photoshop.

    Adobe is going to have to deal with the fact that Apple is successfully and rapidly exterminating Flash from of the internet. I would wager that the Flash is declining faster than anyone predicted, thus demonstrating the incredible power of the iPhone, iPod touch and, most recently, the iPad. That’s right, Droid, the iPhone is the only incredible phone. And Apple did not have to piggyback on Star Wars to make it seem attractive. Apple could have called it the Turd and it would have sold just as well.
