iPhone prototype uses same Apple ‘A4’ SoC and 256MB RAM as iPad

“The markings on the processor inside the latest photographed next-generation iPhone prototype reveal the system-on-a-chip includes the Apple A4 and 256MB of Samsung DRAM on two dies,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.

“The information was revealed to iFixit through the marking seen on the device, which was photographed in Vietnam,” Marsal reports. “The markings ‘APL0398 339S0084’ indicate the hardware includes the A4 microprocessor, while ‘K4X2G643GE’ reveals the 256MB of system RAM from Samsung”

Marsal reports, “Both were also found in the processor inside the iPad.”

  1. This appears to be verification of what everyone expected – the leveraging of the latest technology used in the iPad for the next generation iPhone and iPod touch. Apple is smart that way…

  2. So much for being surprised during the next keynote. Maybe instead of answering fan-mail, Steve Jobs should to get back to kicking arse and taking names at Apple HQ so that these leaks do not happen again.

  3. This is pretty cool, but it makes me wonder. If the iPhone’s processor and memory is going to be as good as the iPad’s, then the iPad loses some of its appeal as the much faster and more powerful larger version of the iPhone.

    The iPad should be more powerful than the iPhone, as a significantly larger device with a higher resolution. I didn’t expect the iPhone to catch up so quickly.

    I’m still getting an iPad though, but this is going to make me keep thinking: Maybe upgrading my iPhone would have been a better investment.

    NOTE: This is not a rant. I’m impressed. In fact, “too” impressed. 😀

  4. We don’t know if it’s clocked at the same speed, and Ars reported that the part numbers were not identical on the A4s. It’s likely that the ipad is still much faster than the iPhone, if only because the iPhone has far less room for energy storage.
