iPad takes off as flight school teaching tool

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Virtual Aviation, which runs full-motion flight simulators in the UK, is using iPads as high-tech teacher’s assistants to train pilots,” Nicole Martinelli reports for Cult of Mac.

“Instead of instructors lugging around heavy cases filled with maps, charts, manuals, weather reports, flight plans and checklists every time they go into the simulator — they use iPads instead,” Martinelli reports.

Martinelli continues, “‘It’s absolutely fabulous, it’s no exaggeration to say that the iPad is going to revolutionise our business, whilst being used in an unenvisaged role,’ James Stevenson of Virtual Aviation said.”

  1. Really, MDN…this has very, very little to do with Apple. Just change the colors and logo to the Royal Air Force and start advertising for them already. 17 and a half more articles or so and the app and bookmarks are gone.

Come on MDN. Most of us are not interested in your reactionary views on human flight. Your promotion of an idiot app like this has ZERO to do with Apple or its products. If you want to risk driving away half or more of your audience keep this up. We actually read Erica Jong’s book!

Virtual Aviation? Call it what it isn’t.

    Watch this post get censored.

What about Rachel, and Keith, and Alan Colmes, and all of the others that nobody watches???!!!

Racists! Agnostics! Jesus freaks! Fiscal conservatives! Limited government proponents! Hitler-lovers! Circus clown fsckers! Effeminate Upper West Side Elites! Unafraid to fly! Cheney! Rummy!! *gasp* Buuussshhh!!! (43, not 41. I kind of like 41.)

    Blaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Forget it, you commie, fascist, socialist, neocon, gun-nut, bible-thumping, oil-drilling, pro-life, lawn-fertilizing, anti-death penalty, pro gay marriage scumbags – I’m not waiting! MDN app deleted. MDN bookmarks deleted. MDN autofill deleted. All memories of MDN forgotten. MDN is dead to me. MDN sleeps with the fishes.

    Superior Being, out!

  2. ” …. “‘It’s absolutely fabulous, it’s no exaggeration to say that the iPad is going to revolutionise our business, whilst being used in an unenvisaged role’ …. “

Going to be reading this type of sentence over and over!

  3. @”Superior” Being,

“Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a god superior to themselves. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.”

–from The Notebooks of Lazarus Long by Robert Heinlein

  4. The article quoted seemed rather thin, but I must be missing a vast amount of subtext that is patently obvious to ‘Superior Being’. Can anyone explain what gives?

  5. I have no idea what Superior Being is talking about…

Anyway, back on topic; this has given me a fantastic idea for an Enterprise App.

I have one question: if you have an Enterprise Developer Licence and create and Enterprise App, can you lock down the iPad so you can only use the App I’m thinking about developing and disable things like the iPod, Mail etc.?

  6. Speaking of pilots with iPads, I can just hear the VFR Navigation App saying bank 30° left at that next Cumulus Cloud and continue on a heading of 137° for 230 miles.

  7. I am a teacher and would like to see the ipad used as a teaching tool in English, math and so on. rosetastone language apps. translator apps for adult education Chinese to English and so on. dictionary apps as well as encyclopedia apps. I see this as replacing text books for everything that is taught in schools today. just download text books. add a printer app and you can do your home work and print it out. this is all very exciting. I will be transferring to China to begin teaching in Beihai. and this ipad can take the place of the 500 plus books I have to have sent ahead .
