Mac & Cheese: Kraft offers employees substantial stipend to buy computer of their choice

Apple Online Store“It started with the smartphones. Last year, Kraft Foods Inc. offered a stipend to employees who wanted to use their own iPhone, Android or BlackBerry and ditch their company-issued phone,” Alejandra Cancino reports for Chicago Breaking Business.

“That idea gave way to the creation of the ‘Bring Your Own Computer’ program, in which the company gives some employees a ‘substantial’ stipend to buy a computer of their choice, said Ana Paula Cruz, a Kraft spokeswoman,” Cancino reports. “In turn, employees will solve their own problems with help from blogs and discussion boards written by the company’s information systems department.”

Cancino reports, “Cruz said Kraft is giving employees a security software and rigorous guidelines to avoid problems. Though she hasn’t decided what computer she wants to buy, she said she got an iPhone last year with the company’s smartphone stipend.”

Welcome to your worst nightmare.

Yes, your little luddite totalitarian fiefdoms are finally collapsing, company by company; large and small and in-between. The Dark Age of Personal Computing that you helped to usher in and fought to perpetuate for all of these years is blessedly drawing to a close.

Our advice: Stop making excuses, fighting change, and retarding your company’s progress while wasting its time and money. It’s time to either start learning something about Apple’s superior Macintosh platform or prepare for a career change.

  1. Bravo Kraft for your out-of-the (mac ‘n cheese)-box thinking!

    IT departments are cost centers which are constantly being asked to do more with less. It’s only a matter of time before the “Microsoft IS the best practice” thinking that permeates the IT culture is forced from above (from cost reasons) to change.

    And when it does, Apple will be there, with the amazing TCO that MAcs have always had.

  2. Hopefully they provide a better stipend for an Apple. The productivity of an employee using a Mac will be much better than one using a resource-hogging, virus-vulnerable, I-need-to-defragment-my-hard-drive, blue-screen-of-death, my-registry-is-corrupted Windows computer.

  3. Walked into the lobby of a Fortune 500 energy company. Girl behind the reception desk had a huge official Dell, but right in front of her was a MacBook. Why the two? She said the Dell was there because it was assigned to her. The MacBook was so she could get some work done!!!

    The corporate communications dept. had a similar mix, the VP there has her own personal MBP. Graphics department: a dozen new Mac Pros with cinema displays.

    The IT head works on the pcs, but loves his Mac. How long before companies like this finally ask the obvious question?

  4. The contrast between Kraft’s decision, and the edicts of my IT dept. couldn’t be more stark.

    My lot locked my Mac off the network last year on the grounds that it was a “security threat”.

  5. Perhaps the IT department at Kraft and the executives at Kraft are not in a war as others have suggested. Perhaps the IT department is ahead of the curve. This COULD have actually been their idea.
