RUMOR: 3G/4G hybrid Apple iPhone may come to Verizon this summer

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“An unusual rumor this afternoon has a Verizon-ready iPhone shipping in the summer,” Electronista reports.

“Multiple Verizon staffers and other sources claim the CDMA iPhone would not only be ready in the summer but that it could be a launch device for the availability of Verizon’s 4G network,” Electronista reports. “While questionable, the Engadget details are billed as ‘surprisingly specific.'”

Electronista reports, “It would most likely be a hybrid phone with both 4G as well as CDMA and 3G if real, as Verizon doesn’t plan to cover more than 25 to 30 cities with LTE on launch.”

  1. Anybody that any stock in the continual flow of Verizon/iPhone rumors is a droid.

Not going to happen until Verizon’s LTE network covers more than “25 – 35” cities. Period.

  2. It continues to amaze me that people spout and even believe this stuff. Forte last time, ahem:
VERIZONS NETWORK DOESN’T SUPPORT VOICE AND DATA AT THE SAME TIME! THUS NEGATING ONE OF THE iPhone’s GREATEST FEATURES! IT IS A DIFFERENT AND INCOMPATIBLE CELLULAR TECHNOLOGY WITH ALL APPLE PHONES PRODUCED TO DATE. THIS WOULD REQUIRE APPLE TO MAUFACTURE TWO DIFFERENT PHONES FOR A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE WORLD MARKET, WHICH MAKES. NO. SENSE! AT. ALL.

This has been a very loud PSA for the deaf and dumb who continue to spout and believe this garbage.

MDN word: had, as in: had Verizon given apple what they wanted in the first place, and not been morons, these rumors would not exist.

  3. Apple currently makes 4 versions of the iPhone if you don’t count capacity differences: iPhone 3G; iPhone 3GS; iPhone for China w/o WiFi; iPhone with special China WiFi specificiation. Why not add another when it will double sales in the US and kill Android?

LTE supports calls and data at the same time. You would only have the current Verizon limitation in non LTE cities.

  4. “Apple currently makes 4 versions of the iPhone if you don’t count capacity differences: iPhone 3G; iPhone 3GS”

What are the technical differences between the 3G and the 3GS besides a faster processor?

    “iPhone for China w/o WiFi”

Disabled in software, just like tethering is “disabled” here in the U.S.?

“Why not add another when it will double sales in the US and kill Android?”

Because Verizon’s LTE network is vapor until it ships. Apple doesn’t deal in vapor. There’s also the little incident of Verizon turning Apple down when Steve pitched the iPhone. I’m thinking you only get one chance to say no to him.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  5. Verison Staffer #1: OMG! Our numbers keep falling, people are going over to AT&T;because of the iPhone!!!!

Verison Staffer #2: No problem, I will make up a rumor and call a few bone-head guys to spread it around that we are getting the iPhone as well.

Verison Staffer #1: But isn’t that a lie?

Verison Staffer #2: Sure it is but if our clients contacts are about to run out we have to tell them something or we’ll loose them all.

Verison Staffer #1: Oh I get it. So if we tell them we are getting the iPhone even though we’re not, they can keep playing on their plan without go it AT&T;for a new contract were they will be gone for 2 years.

Verison Staffer #2: That’s right. This way it give us time to “freeze” the market and keep or customers even though we know we are not going to have the iPhone available. Plus, we might be able to lock the into a new two year contract by convincing them we’ll have a “upgrade” policy for when it comes to Version.

Verison Staffer #1: Wow, but isn’t that really shitty business practices and not very fair to our customers?

Verison Staffer #2: Screw the customers. Do you want to been unemployeed in this economy? Besides, we’ll just keep blaming it he said/she said and no one will know. Plus, it give these guys at the rumor mill rag sites something juicy to write about because god knows what else they got to do.

Version Staffer #1: Well, I guess you’re right. I don’t know though, I still feel bad for our customers but I need my job. Sure wish we had the iPhone. I’d be able to sell the hell out of those.

  6. @ voice of reason

calm down there buddy. apple needs to make an iPhone with CDMA compatability if it wants to be on verizons network in the next 5 years (they want to). I hope apple does it sooner rather than later to get rid of all this android nonsense.

  7. Why not a tmobile iPhone? Other then a different 3g frequency they would not have to change anything. I am betting that it’s the same frequency as some of the euro spec iPhones.

In most other countries iPhone is on several carriers why not here? They could do a CDMA hybrid just like the bb storm and storm 2 are.

  8. @ Voice of Reason–

If the phone could switch between LTE and 3G technology, then it would still be feasible.

The 3G signal that we have now reverts to 2G when it’s not available, and you can’t surf and talk on that either.

I’m not saying you’re wrong–I’m just saying that it is foolish to think that you know Apple’s secret plans for the future.

If the entire tech industry can’t figure out Apple’s disposition, what make you think you can?

  9. Getting the iPhone over on Verizon is of course a good thing.

However, despite the lauding of Verizon’s superior service to ATandT, Verizon still won’t let you make a call and surf the web at the same time. Not yet anyway. What’s with that?!

I’d very much like to hear about European mobile services and what they’re currently up to. Historically, the USA has LAGGED in mobile technology versus Europe and even Asia. What’s that about?!
