Those cursor buttons would slow people down. You would have tap the buttons many times, or hold the buttons down a while to move the cursor over any distance. The way it is now, you can move the cursor anywhere by a single tap.
In designing a touch UI, perhaps of the most important considerations is how make it usable with as few taps as possible.

I agree with you. It would be great to be able to go back a couple spaces and add/edit a letter to a word without having to backspace and erase the word or get out the magnifying glass.

Touce’, but maybe “better editing” is not the proper term.
The “alternative” editing the iPhone allows is a good, well, alternative, but what would make iPhone editing “better” is to have the touch-spot editing AND the cursor buttons.
You can’t tell me it’s better to move my finger(s) away from the keyboard to make an edit in every case.
When I need to go back to a different part of the document the touch cursor is the best option. When I just need to go back a few spaces the cursor seems to be a better option.
All I’m saying is make it an option, at least.
FYI: I started typing this response on my iPhone in the MDN app and gave up and typed it on my work PC—-eeeeewwwwwww!!
