Apple sells one million iPads in first 28 days after initial model launch

invisibleSHIELD case for iPadApple today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.

“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.

Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone or iPod touch.

MacDailyNews Take: “There’s nothing on iPad I look at and say, ‘Oh, I wish Microsoft had done it'” – Bill Gates, February 10, 2010

  1. Waiting here in the UK for the release, so Steve add another one to the tally cause it’s a sure bet I’ll have a 3G WiFi 32GB one as soon as you’ll let me!!!

  2. MDN: About quoting Bill Gates’ “There’s nothing on iPad I look at and say, ‘Oh, I wish Microsoft had done it'” – Hey, if he wishes not to create something like the iPad, his wish may be granted. And believe me, there are a lot of people out there that couldn’t be happier – although they may not be aware of it! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  3. @fergman

you’re right. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that an authorized biography is in progress.

He’s always been a very private person so the idea of him speaking out, offering opinions and such, is extraordinary.

Maybe in preparation for the book, his ghost writer has convinced him to be more open about his thoughts and opinions. With his new-found voice he’s speaking publicly about matters of interest.

I don’t care, as long as he doesn’t
    start singing karaoke.

  4. I just want to say that I like Microsoft’s approach—I like it a lot. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />

And…I too, am tired of “magical.”

  5. @Macromancer, I agree the word sounds strange and out of place. The only thing I can think of is “magical” was very carefully chosen to tell the average Joe consumer that the iPad is nothing like the other computers you may have used. It’s exactly because the word feel out of place to you and I that it was chosen.

  6. People complain about the ‘closed system’ but what open system could ever create a completely new device and still have all the apps from its other devices work out of the box right from day one? Instead of pissing and moaning, they should get on with making this product.

Android doesn’t have a chance, it’s already fragmented and it isn’t even beyond beta except in name. Why would I be interested in having a huge range of handsets to choose from if none of them are as good as the one that offers ‘no choice’?

  7. I noticed that Paul Thurrott charlatan has even surreptitiously updated his “What I use” page to include an iPad. This after in his review said nobody needs it, not a game changer, wait for the next version etc…sooo dishonest…the M$ fanboys aren’t happy about this at all.

  8. Aventurine in the hands of the unenlightened is but a rock.

Mr Reeee, the parallels between Steve Jobs and Walt Disney is surprisingly similar and after his book is published a lot of people will make that connection.

  9. So given all models are sold out as of today that means 1.3 million out there now. And the first million were all Wi-Fi only. At this pace given supply continues to grow, we’ll likely see the 2 millionth mark passed during May. Whoopie!

  10. Jailbroke my iPhone late last night and now with MyWi running, my iPad is online wherever I go – no second data contract required. That is the way it should be. Now if they’d only open the App store in Canada already…

  11. Got my 3G iPad on Friday, and left the next morning for a conference full of geeks (medical researchers and engineers). Know how a puppy is a chick magnet? Well, an iPad is a geek magnet. Everyone keeps asking to see it. I probably gave 10 demos yesterday alone.

  12. Chucklz, ‘Got my 3G on Friday. LOVE IT.
Activated the 3G connection yesterday and it looks like the 250mb level is not going to work for me. Already half way gone.’

Discriminate is not a bad word.

  13. So, iPad is MBP killer. Is that what Steve wanted?

Question: how many magicals, at the lower margins they bring, have to be sold to overcome the loss of ordinary high margin MBPs?

    Just wonderin….

  14. Come on MDN que up those iCal’ed quotes.

Right now I don’t have any doubt of 3-4 million sold in the first quarter. With the international still to come the only limit right now is production.

10 million by end of year no problem (big resurgence in fall when 4.0 releases)
