Pixelmator 1.6 Nucleus to go Mac OS X Snow Leopard-only

Apple Online Store“Yup, that’s right: we are moving our whole code to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. In fact, we already moved it a few months ago. And, boy, are we happy about that!” Pixelmator co-founder Saulius Dailide blogs.

“Moving 100% to Snow Leopard not only makes the development easier and faster for us, but also it makes your favorite image editor a much better app and also an environmentally cleaner app (considering that the environment is the Mac OS X),” Dailide writes. “Other reasons for the move are obvious: new technologies that we can take advantage of, old show-stopping technologies that we can get rid of, an extremely fast growing number of Snow Leopard users (our web stats are our intel), happier developers (us), and so on and on and on.”

Dailide writes, “In other words, we just love developing for Mac and wish to take advantage of the best that Mac can give.”

“For those of you who are still running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, I can say that even though it is a good OS, I really hope that Pixelmator 1.6 Nucleus will encourage you to upgrade to an even better OS – Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard,” Dailide writes. “Or if you can’t or don’t want to move to Snow Leopard, Pixelmator 1.5.1 Spider (still one of the best apps) will be there for you for awhile.”:

Dailide writes, “I just wanted to let you know about this move (which is very big, especially considering the huge number of Pixelmator users out there) so that you could prepare yourself if necessary.”

MacDailyNews Take: Pixelmator is a testament to what’s possible when developers code for specific platforms’ strengths versus lazily excreting lowest common denominator bloat dumbed-down for multiple platforms. RIght, Adobe?

Do not buy Adobe’s Photoshop Elements until you have tried Pixelmator’s free 30-day trial. We use Pixelmator daily.

  1. “Pixelmator is not nearly as powerful as Paintshop Pro from 5 years ago!”

I agree, I wish jasc would make a friggin’ Mac version of this.

Pixelmator is workable, but it has little things that bother me. Such as when I hit “resize” it doesn’t remember the last size I entered. I have to re-enter the size every single time. When I hit “save as” it doesn’t remember the last folder I saved to. I have to nav to it every single time. Annoying.

Of course, it’s quite possible there’s a setting somewhere for that, but the prefs pane is pretty sparse. But I’m bloody sick of Adobe and will not give them any more money for PS Elements.

  2. I stumbled across Pixelmator a few weeks ago. It’s perfect for what I want (making icons and graphics for my iPhone apps, making desktop backgrounds for mildly amused friends and family, very basic photo editing). I’ve been going through some tutorials and am having a blast.

I like their philosophy on upgrading to new technology (Snow Leopard) and leaving the old behind. It’s easy for me to say that since I’ve been on Snow Leopard since day one. Anyway, Steve Jobs would approve, and Steve Ballmer and Adobe’s head Shantanu Narayen would be completely mystified.

  3. So now I have the ultra cheap Pixelmator at my fingertips instead of the real thing from Adobe that would cost me around $ 1000. Now I only need a mac that runs Snow. And they can be had at 999. Great! Anyone a 22lbs doorstop, only five years old and cost 2800 with upgrades, you can have it for lets say… 998!
