Steve Jobs is flying again

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Steve Jobs is flying again,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “His private jet, grounded for most of 2009, is back in the air.”

“From January to March, Apple’s CEO racked up $127,000 in expenses on his private Gulfstream V jet [vs. $550,000 in autumn 2007 and only $4,000 for all of 2009 while Jobs battled health issues],” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

Elmer-DeWitt reports, “Apple managed just fine while Jobs’ jet was grounded, although investors will probably be happy to learn that it’s flying again. We know Jobs made trips to the East Coast to demonstrate the iPad to New York-based publishers. Whatever else he might be up to is not revealed in Apple’s Form 10-Q.”

  1. @Another

Please be more specific about what he’s preaching. Give specific examples and quotes. And no, you cannot ask Fox News what to say.

On another note at least you can ADMIT you’re a peasant.

  2. The plane was in his garage most of ’09.
Steve was tinkering with the engines, and working on the body, and paint.
Steve’s Gulfstream has now been chopped and channeled and lowered. Steve has massaged another 37 horsepower out of ‘er, and she’s now coated in 4 coats of Candy Apple Red Metal-Flake, and 5 coats of clear lacquer.
Now that he’s finished this latest mod, you’ll be seeing lots more of Steve’s jet.

  3. “although investors will probably be happy to learn that it’s flying again.”

As an AAPL investor, a Mac fanboy, and more importantly, as a human being – I pray for the well being of the pilots, the maintenace crew, Steve Jobs, and anyone else who may be aboard the various flights.

    Peace.

  4. Having Steve Jobs flying around in a Gulfstream V jet is probably the worst decision Apple has made in the past decade.

It’s pretty ridiculous really. Why are they penny pinching here? Get him an Air Force One level plane complete with F-22 escorts.

  5. Umm, while the $127k seems impressive, by my rough calculations, that is roughly the cost to go from Cupertino to New York twice round trip… The G5 is quite expensive to operate (for us regular folks) – something like $10-11 per mile, or $4500-5500 per hour. At a cruising speed of say 500, its a 6 hour flight to NY, so at $5000/hr that makes $30,000 each way. At $10/mile times 3000 miles (roughly) that is similar at $30,000 each way.

So… he has traveled a little, but not much. When it gets up over one million in expenses, then perhaps alert the media…
