invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“A unit of Prime View International Co., the world’s largest supplier of screens for electronic readers, provides a key display technology used in Apple Inc.’s iPad, senior officials at the unit said Wednesday,” Ting-I Tsai reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“Hydis Technology Co., Prime View’s South Korean subsidiary, developed the technology, known as advanced fringe field switching, that widens the screen’s viewing angles and improves visibility in sunlight,” Tsai reports. “Prime View Chairman Scott Liu declined to comment on specific clients at the company’s investor conference Wednesday in Taipei.”

Tsai reports, “Kuo Ming-chi, an analyst at research firm Digitimes Inc., said Prime View’s technology also contributed significantly to the iPad’s reduced power consumption. Prime View in December signed a cross-licensing pact with LG Display Co., which analysts have said is likely one of the iPad’s flat-panel suppliers. LG Display said in December that it would invest $30.5 million in Hydis through a corporate bond purchase, following a $10 million investment in Prime View global depositary receipts. LG Display declined to comment Wednesday.”
