51% of early Apple iPad adopters own Windows PCs, 63% own Macs

“51% of iPad buyers own Windows PCs,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “Also, 63% own Macs, 8.5% iPhones, 2.89% Linux boxes and 1.3% Android phones.”

“Dan Ruby at Chitika Labs — the folks who run the much revised live iPad tracker (907,000 as of Friday afternoon) — sent along [a] bar chart,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

“It shows, based on a survey of nearly 75,000 early iPad adopters, some of the non-Apple (AAPL) devices they own,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

  1. Already, a slight majority of iPad owners have Windows PCs (although many seem to also be Mac users). In the long run, a significant majority of iPad customers will non-Mac computer users.

That is the brilliance of this product for Apple. Sure, Apple may lose a few MacBook sales to people who decide to get an iPad instead, to use with their existing PC. But that’s just substituting one Apple product for another. Most of the lost laptop sales will be to Windows-based “netbook” vendors, which is a product category Apple intentionally avoided. And if they really like the iPad experience, they will probably end up buying a Mac too when it’s time to replace the PC.

  2. I will admit, I own two PC’s. I also own about 12 Macs of different vintages, but they all work. Plus some other stuff. No iPad yet, but two iPhones… And waiting for June to get another ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Did you see that 12% of the 63% of Mac owners own a Windows PC. Just because you own something doesn’t mean it is used or is working! They just haven’t taken it to the curb yet!

  4. The same 12% of both Mac and Windows owners chose another Apple product. That is the halo of Macintosh users that switched from Windows PCs and go on buying other Apple products and services!
