Library of Congress to archive every public tweet, ever, since Twitter’s inception

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Every public tweet, ever, since Twitter’s inception in March 2006, will be archived digitally at the Library of Congress. That’s a LOT of tweets, by the way: Twitter processes more than 50 million tweets every day, with the total numbering in the billions,” Matt Raymond reports for The Library of Congress.

“We will also be putting out a press release later with even more details and quotes. Expect to see an emphasis on the scholarly and research implications of the acquisition,” Raymond reports. “I’m no Ph.D., but it boggles my mind to think what we might be able to learn about ourselves and the world around us from this wealth of data. And I’m certain we’ll learn things that none of us now can even possibly conceive.”

Raymond reports, “So if you think the Library of Congress is “just books,” think of this: The Library has been collecting materials from the web since it began harvesting congressional and presidential campaign websites in 2000. Today we hold more than 167 terabytes of web-based information, including legal blogs, websites of candidates for national office, and websites of Members of Congress.”

“We also operate the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program www.digitalpreservation.gov, which is pursuing a national strategy to collect, preserve and make available significant digital content, especially information that is created in digital form only, for current and future generations,” Raymond reports. “In other words, if you’re looking for a place where important historical and other information in digital form should be preserved for the long haul, we’re it!”

  1. Mr. Think,

I’ll get right back to you after I finish kowtowing to a communist dictator who massacres or enslaves his own citizens because they committed the crime of desiring to be free – and if I can ever get my lips off Oprah’s big, fat, black ass.

  2. It is always interesting how willing people are to display their receptiveness to propaganda that encourages discrimination and hateful retoric online.

It is so easy to hide behind a keyboard and spout off things that you know don’t feel right to feel, believe, or say. Many of these same people prominently display their religion at every opportunity.

Save yourself the need to be forgiven and try simply living rite. Fix yourself by forgiving and working on yourself…and stop drinking the hateful cool-aid. It will feel so much better and leave the world a better place without so much negativity and animosity. All of our children and their children will appreciate it.

  3. No… Mr faux Obama is some ACORN shrill or SEIU thug who has taken up the call to fein outrage ( http://www.crashtheteaparty.org/ ) at other Americans exercising their Constitutional right.

I sorry, I still can’t find it in the Constitution where it says that only the left can protest and the right has to shut up and get out of the way? And hell, I thought our Secretary of State, Hillary, said at one time, “we have the right to disagree with this administration or any administration yada, yada, yada”. Again is this only meant for the left?… I’ll agree on two things… one) stop drinking the Kool-Aid is right and two) Obama and the Dems have been a bigger “Divider not a Uniter” then George Bush could have ever hope to become!

  4. Agree with them or not, the Tea Party, like any other group of Americans, has a right to its freedom of speech. It appears that the organization http://www.crashtheteaparty.org wants to deny these citizens their right to the First Amendment.

I did a WHOIS search and found details here:

    http://www.whois.net/whois/crashtheteaparty.org

It appears the founder(s) of this group registered under false identity. Cowards. But then, those who would attempt to deny a person their rights usually is a coward.

  5. @ Rot’nApple, FirstAmendment;

You forgot one thing- To America’s left wing, the 1st Amendment applies only to themselves.
Everyone else is expected to “sit down, shut up and do as you’re told”.

  6. Nothing that was said in my prior post was aimed at the tea party but was rather aimed at cautioning against the long term implications of speach that can easily be perceived as discriminatory or hateful.

Nothing was said or implied about Americans not having the right of speach…hateful or not, cowardly behind keyboards and all. I appreciate all of my rights and yours too.

One of the best things about our country is the fact that spirited ideological debates lead to a better society and encourage all to join the debate rather than act as sheep who regurgitate propaganda and blindly follow anyone of any party, ideology, or religion. That is the worst thing that could happen to us as a country.

Germany ended up with a one party system after drinking the cool-aid and embracing the discriminitory and hateful propaganda which created the concentration camps that you have insighted. I have been in the concentration camps long after they hav closed, thank God. I have smelled the smells that will never dissipate and have thoughts and feelings that will never fade.

Excercise your rights and your freedoms, and protect them by excising them…but don’t think by oppressing others through thoughts, speech, or actions that you or any of us are more free. Those mistakes errode freedom as a whole and drinking the kool-aid and buying into an imaginary conspiracy to strip you of your rights is another propaganda technique and method of control.

For the record, I think the tea party is great and while will not be joining it I do support it. Continue thinking, speaking any way you want (thoughtfully would be my suggestion), and debating civility..and hopefully peacefully.

  7. In one million years, when sun has killed off all humans, the evolved cockroaches will unearth these ancient gems of a past species, and conclude that we had brains the size of a pea…..

  8. …”I’m no Ph.D.”… “I’m certain we’ll learn things that none of us
    now can even possibly conceive.”…
    Matt Raymond:Director of Communications

Matt’s been smelling too many musty books which have
turned his brain to mush. He needs fresh air and a life.
We’ll learn unconceivable things from trillions of tweets?
    Oh, please!

  9. What else have they been archiving without our knowledge.

We are actually supposed to have a right to privacy (9th & 10th Amendments).

It has never existed, unless it benefits the government, and will likely never exist unless people decide to fight for it. No one even understands what it is anymore.
