“While Apple has yet to introduce the 2010 iPhone, the company has started to make supplier selections for next year’s version,” Scott Moritz reports for TheStreet.com. “And at least one big change with the fifth iteration of the iPhone will be the camera.”
“Hello Sony, goodbye OmniVision. Apple has picked Sony’s 8-megapixel camera chip for the 2011 iPhone, according to supply and manufacturing sources, said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar,” Moritz reports.
“If true, it’s good news for iPhone fans looking for more photo shooting power on their phones. But the move would displace OmniVision, Apple’s current camera supplier to the iPhone,” Moritz reports. “OmniVision is expected to supply a 5-megapixel camera for the upcoming version of the iPhone due out this summer, said Kumar.”
Moritz reports, “The most recent iPhone 3GS features a 3.2 megapixel camera.”

its not about megapixels as much as lens quality, sensor quality, and focus/flash/zoom… but it will be an improvement ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Any camera news for the iPod Touch?
Screw that. How about a flash?
Woo hoo…8 megapixels of graininess!
I know – it’s a phone, not a camera. Why then, though, would we need 8 megapixels?
Sony Ericsson camera phones are world renowned for their picture quality. If true, it should mean a definite improvement beyond megapixel size.
I’ve read about evidence of a flash to be added as well, so keep your fingers crossed. A Sony camera has to be better than anything from OmniVision. Just an assumption, but Sony has quite a good history with digital cameras.
And if the graphics chip is fast enough, they’ll likely be capturing 1080p HD video in some flavour of H-624 (AVCHD perhaps?).
Must….upgrade….. iPhone…..now!
Megapixels are important for print size. An 8 mp camera would yield larger prints. The quality of a 5 or 8 isn’t the issue. It’s ALL about the lens.
Take anything from Scott Moritz with a HUGE grain of salt. Having said that, I totally agree with Steve516, cause image quality has less to do with numbers of pixels and more to do with lens size and sensor size. It’s optics, limited, not pixel limited. In theory, the optimum pixel pitch is 6 microns. That’s roughly what DSLRs use per pixel to optimize for maximum quality. At 6 microns, and the standard chip size, the optimum number of pixels is 1MP. In other words, once you’ve gone past 1MP, you are cramming more pixels in, and increasing sensor noise.
This also could be about 1080p HD video, though I sure as hell hope the 2010 camera at least records 720p HD video.
Moritz is the number one dumbass commenting on apple. A moron, so discount what the azzwiper says
Ya know what I hear from my girlfriend all the time? Why do the pix on her MyTouch suck compared to my 3gs?
Cuz, really, it’s all about the “mega”
moritz = dipshit
Believe what KenC and X have written. Moritz and his sidekick Kumar have teamed up before with absolutely no truthful information. TheStreet in general stinks!
Err…
Thanks to jmmx for the tip on this story
yes?
If I see one more comment about how “megapixels don’t matter, it’s about the lens” my head is going to explode.
Gee, yes we get it already. It took a decade or so but finally we understand why the tiny pinhole on the phone isn’t as good as that big heavy tube of high quality glass those pros lug around.
To understand why 5 or 8 megapixel cameras from OmniVision or Sony will never find their way into iPhone, read

Apple is not using outdated technology and copying what technology leaders did two-three years ago to save a penny and enhance profits. They are using outdated technology to protect the network and user experience and in the end the customer – that is: you and me! That is a very noble gesture.
What? No 32-MP camera?
Wow, an increase in megapixels. Scott is really going out on a limb with that prediction. Scott Moritz is Cromer stooge. This idiot has no clue what Apple is doing.
Sorry Anders your comment doesn’t hold water. Why is my basic iPhone camera protecting the network or my user experience? Please explain.
@Snapper
Did you even read the link Anders provided for you to explain what he was saying?

Yes, it seems the cameras in Sony Ericsson’s phones are quite good in comparison, but I’ve never seen an SE phone that is as slim as the iPhone.
Can a Sony-based camera in the iPhone really make that much of an improvement if the iPhone stays as thin as it is?
