iPhone 4.0 may bring printing support to iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“A small clue hints that Apple may add printing support in iPhone 4.0 or another update,” Electronista reports.

“Support notes for the iPad’s iWork apps all note that ‘printing directly from iPad is not currently available’ and imply that it will be an option at a later date,” Electronista reports.

“Rumors so far haven’t confirmed whether or not it would appear in Thursday’s special event, though it presents the first clear opportunity,” Electronista reports.

  1. For the iPad, I don’t think Apple should load any printer drivers. The iPad should go online and obtain a (proven) temporary printer driver for the printer(s) selected using bonjour, if one is available.

If network printing will be the only way to print, then it should be no big deal to obtain the driver online when you need to print. The driver(s) could be cached until the machine is turned off, and refreshed with the latest and greatest when it is time to print again.

This would help keep buggy and outdated drivers from mucking up the experience on the iPad.

  2. I think the key is for the iPad to function as its own device, without needing to tether or transfer data to a legacy PC for something as basic as printing. Likewise, new product setup needs to happen in the cloud without having to connect the iPad to a computer running iTunes.

This scenario will create a level playing field for directly comparing the iPad and say a 13″ Macbook Pro, with the outcome determining what the 2012 Macbook will look like imho.

  3. Of course Apple is going to introduce printer support to their Touch v.4 OS. The thing is, it’ll only support one type of printer because…

    …Apple is re-introducing the LaserWriter! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    (tongue firmly in cheek)

  4. Printers are the new floppy drive in tech. I use one almost every day, and I always feel like I may as well be checking punch cards or changing cassette tapes or replacing vacuum tubes.

I don’t know what the answer is, but I think that printer technology is definitely one of the most antiquated out there. Hopefully someone will come up with an intelligent solution with fewer moving parts and somehow do away with the “drivers” issue altogether.

  5. Great comment bon. I was torn (ooh, bad pun) about describing printing as a necessary feature. The current hardware and driver model could certainly be improved as you and ET have suggested.

Another approach would be a more streamlined workflow for sharing and annotating digital content. There are solutions out there but none yet with the simplicity needed for a much bigger shift away from paper in my opinion.

For example, I’m surprised that Apple has not yet integrated Pages with iWeb into a single publishing app, in a way that would make print-versus-cloud an easy decision point for any finished document.
