Verizon CEO asks Steve Jobs for right to carry Apple’s revolutionary iPhone

Apple Online Store “Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg says the company has told Apple that it wants to carry the iPhone. But he declined to say when — or even if — the popular smart phone will be available for Verizon Wireless customers,” The Associated Press reports.

“In remarks Tuesday before the Council on Foreign Relations, Seidenberg cited a recent Wall Street Journal report that said Apple is working on a version of the iPhone that would be compatible with Verizon’s network,” AP reports. “But he did not confirm the report or give any further details Tuesday.”

Electronista reports, “In follow-up details, he specified that he’d most like to have a 4G-capable iPhone but that it was “their call” at Apple as to what would ship. The LTE-based 4G network will go live in the middle of this year but won’t get its first phones until early 2011 at best.”

“The remarks are a rare sign of active engagement with Apple on Verizon’s part. It has always said it would welcome the iPhone but has usually stopped short of mentioning any resumed dialog,” Electronista reports. “Verizon is known to have turned down the iPhone when it was still in development and is believed to have objected primarily over issues of control. Although retail support and sales have been publicly cited as factors, it’s also suspected that Verizon was unwilling to drop many of its criticized practices at the time, such as insisting on using its own branded software, disabling hardware features and otherwise insisting on a final say.”

Electronista reports, “Apple’s exclusivity deal with AT&T is widely thought to be ending this year and might open the door to a CDMA iPhone in the US.”

MacDailyNews Take: Ivan must be getting tired of pimping pretend iPhones with his misleading maps.

  1. If Verizon will agree to ALL of Apple’s terms, they should get the iPhone. If they refuse even ONE thing, Apple should add Sprint and T-Mobile and make Verizon the ONLY cell provider without the iPhone!
    Go Apple!

  2. If verizon gets the phone, then there is less traffic on att. Who cares? And cdma can do simultaneous voice and data as long as the the tower is 1x or newer (they started updating over 6 years ago and as far as I know most if not all are). It’s the handsets that could not until SVDO spec was released. Now they are making the chips.

Being a hater takes too much energy, go do something fun for a change. It’s a fantastic world out there.

  3. Man! Everybody’s coldhearted on here. Actually I AGREE with you.

Apple/Steve went to VZ FIRST. Verizon pulled out their willy and pissed in their face. Now they come back begging ’cause none of the copycat BS phones are selling worth a damn. OOOOPS!

Revenge is a dish best served COLD. Ivan, of COURSE it’s Steve’s call. Can you hear him now?

    Peace.

  4. I want Verizon to get the iPhone because I am on Verizon. I do not want the iPhone on Verizon if it is locked down…. I will wait a little longer until AT&T;quality increases a bit, and switch.

I am already looking forward to trying out AT&T;on my (Still Waiting) iPad here soon.

  5. SJ: Say Please!
    V: ‘Pleasssssse’

    V: ‘with sugar on top!’
    SJ: With whipped cream!
    V: ‘with whipped cream!’
SJ: Top it with a cherry
    V: ‘Top it with…’ ‘Oh forget it’… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />

Poor, poor verizon. If true they decline first offering of iPhone, shareholder would lynch the CEO!

  6. “…it’s also suspected that Verizon was unwilling to drop many of its criticized practices at the time, such as insisting on using its own branded software, disabling hardware features and otherwise insisting on a final say.”

With all that’s known about Apple, it would have to be a cold day in Hell before Apple would agree to any of the above or that Verizon will give up on what they want to do.

This (iPhone on Verizon idea) is a staring contest that’s going to end in a draw.

  7. Oh come now Ivan, you wouldn’t REALLY want that old lame “digitally clueless beauty pageant queen” running on your network, now would you? Just increase… uhh, oh yeah, DROID marketing and production, and everything will be just fine. >;3

  8. As an owner of a 3GS, I pray for Verizon to get the phone; especially since they don’t really need it. While its true ATT has had sales sky rocket with the iPhone, they are still the second largest operator in the US, after Verizon.

Apple needs a CDMA iPhone to open up those markets if they want to continue their amazing sales growth. And for those who do not believe that Apple will create a CDMA version of the phone, wake up. ATT’s “3G” network is a version of CDMA (W-CDMA) and with plans in the works for 4G in ATT and T-Mobile, 3G will never have the kind of coverage (# of towers) provided by GSM. That and about 400 million subscribers (Verizon 80 mil, Sprint 40 Mil, Vodaphone 100mil, etc) is a great reason for Apple and Verizon to kiss and make up.
