RUMOR: Apple to release new MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air this month

TiVo Premiere - Free Shipping“A MacRumors forum poster points to a report (Google translation) from Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily that appears to claim that new MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air models are due for launch sometime this month,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.

“The report seems to indicate that new models were planned for introduction in March but shortages of Intel’s new chips pushed the launch back to this month. The report also claims that Apple will be pushing all three sizes of the MacBook to a maximum of 640 GB hard drives with 8-hour battery performance across the board,” Slivka reports. “Updates to Apple’s MacBook Pro line have been widely expected for several months… Apple’s MacBook Air is similarly due for an update.”

  1. I would be very surprised if Apple has so many major product announcements this close together. Spreading them over the year makes better PR sense. If Apple is going to announce anything, it’s probably an incremental update.

However, I’d love to be very surprised later this month.

  2. I’m getting waryobg of every rumor that says this now. I just have the feeling that they are trying to expose a leak by telling carefully selected retailers/contractors/individuals about upcoming events that are bogus just they can find the mole.

  3. @Harvey, I really expect and hope that Apple will eventually put their own chips into all their computers. I think that is major and we will be increasingly seeing it changing the quality of computer operations. So if that does not happen now (and I wish it would), I would expect that to accompany a really significant upgrade within the next 6 to 18 months. But the current MacBooks (& Pros) really do need an upgrade and I’m hoping it is a good one.

  4. @ Hg Wells,

Apple sells a lot of Macs based upon the Intel chips and ‘If worse comes to worse I can always instal a Windows OS and use all my old software’.

It’s that backup plan that helps Windows users make the leap between platforms. The fact that less than 1% end up switching back is irrelevant.

You can’t abandon 50% of your customers like that. Intel on Macs is here to stay.

  5. Big Al, I don’t think Apple will stay with Intel only because of the current Windows-friendliness. Either Apple will find a way to run Windows on their new chips or Apple will take a questionable leap and choose to abandon Windows. Not supporting Flash may have seemed something strange a few years ago. But Apple seems to be pulling it off to this point. Apple may be taking a new position on Windows, too. I agree that the ability to run Windows continues to bring people to Mac and I hope Apple keeps that capability. But I think they may have something else up their sleeve. Perhaps they can install an optional cheap second chip for Windows users. I know there are options to allow Apple to use their own chips while keeping the Windows option available and I hope we will see them. I do believe that Apple will be able to make better and faster chips than what is out there, if SJ chooses to do that.

  6. I had to buy a new 17″ MBP by March 31st (Damn government fiscal year). It was hard to do because everyone is sold out as is usual before a new model comes in…..so we have known this for close to a month now….and I waited and waited until the last moment.

Oh well, the current version is a damn fine machine and the new model, although it would have been nice to have, would not have really made any significant difference.

  7. Hey Apple! How about ditching the stupid audio input jack configuration you put on the latest MBs & MB Pros. ONE JACK for both audio input and output is STUPID. Audio recording through the line input now requires a cumbersome two step process that requires opening Sound Preferences as well as swapping input and output cords. We need separate input jacks for audio input and output! Please!
    Who’s with me?

The “back to school” special usually runs from mid-July to mid-September.

There is always an educational discount; that is when the special bundle including an iPod, printer, etc. happens.

    Worth waiting for.

  9. @Chaz,

The last 2-3 years the “back-to-school bundle” has been available from June 15th to September 15th. As others have said, the educational discount is always available if buying hardware and/or select software titles at an Apple Store, provided the student has a valid college ID or other proof of upcoming college enrollment. The “bundle” usually includes a rebate for iPods (the last couple of years it was for iPod touches) and some type of printer rebate. I’ve seen the college bundle offered as early as mid-May one year, also.
