Apple posts KnowledgeBase article: “iPad: Does not automatically rejoin known Wi-Fi networks”

Symptoms
Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable when:

• Using the same network name for each network
• Using different security settings for each network

Resolution
If you encounter this issue, try the following:

• Create separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band. This can be done easily by appending one or more characters to the current network name.
   – Example: Add a G to the 802.11b/g network name and an N to the 802.11n network name.
• Ensure that both networks use the same security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2, and so on)

If the issue persists, reset your network settings using Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Note: Always ensure that your Wi-Fi router firmware is up to date.

  1. It is not a bug but substandard Wal-Mart grade routers (nicely referred to as “third-party Wi-Fi routers” in the article). How many people are having the problem when using an Apple router? I’d bet zilch.

    Are you so obtuse as to believe that Apple is not working on an OS fix? Rest assured they are, and the work around they posted is just a temporary solution until that fix is in place

  3. I too am having this same issue, however the resolve won’t work for me. My router – a Belkin N+ – doesnt let me choose different names for the dual band, and the only single-band that I can choose is 802.11n, which leaves my kids old school G4 eMac and G5 iMac ass out of network connectivity.

    Cmon Apple.. Get your act together!!

    I support ‘Duh.’ For years, we made fun of MS for hoodwinking with “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature,’ claims. We certainly don’t need that from Apple, and especially as Apple fans, we don’t want to be labeled as blind followers. So, ‘Duh’ was right to voice his disgust for Apple not readily admitting their short-sightedness on this issue, and whether or not they’ll provide an update, it ought to start with a transparent acknowledgment of the mistake. I’d expect nothing less from a company I care to admire.

  5. The signal from my Overdrive gets dropped constantly by my iPad. I thought it HAD to be the iPad and glad I was right.

    I have trouble logging back into the account as well, and get constant popups “connection failed.”

    Disturbing.

  6. Umm, c’mon people!! This “bug” occurs when someone sets up a router and it a total dumbass! Did you read the conditions that make it “bug” happen?

    So basically, you have two different networks with the same network name, but differing security settings. Freaking DUH! Most Windows boxes will wig out under the same conditions, so what is the issue here?

    It’s supposed to be set up with different network names! If you set up your wireless networks properly, then the iPad has zero issues with joining them.

    To those saying “Cmon Apple.. Get your act together!!” or “It’s a bug. Admit it.” – get a clue, ok?

    Oh, no router on the market today allows you to set up 2 networks and does not allow you to choose different names for each one. Sorry, wrong answer.

  7. I sure hope it is a bug and can be fixed. I am having this problem and it is really annoying. I am a fanboy and have been for 20+ years so it is really hard to show this off and have it boot me off. I have tried everything I have seen posted, the best was taking it out of the case, thought that one worked astime it did not happen again for hours after that last night but after 5 minutes today it booted me again.

  8. My home network is already set up like this. I get slightly better connectivity from the b/g channel than I do the n chanell, but I still go from full to nothing without moving the device.

    Admit it, it’s a bug, find it, and send us a firmware patch.

    For those new to this, there are several apple board discussion threads on poor wi-fi performance with the iPad, particularly around weak and dropped connections.

Before any of you may lose you cool and resort to calling people names, I’d encourage you to broaden your mind and envision thousands (if not millions) of routers and network settings out there that you do not have direct control over. Hotspots at Starbucks, MickyDees, Airports etc. that you can’t tweak the settings, and your precious iPad can’t connect whereas your iPhones and Macbooks can.
    This is a bug of a serious level as it undermines the purpose. If you can’t change the router behaviours en masse, change your device behaviour on how it handshakes.

    Use wired ethernet to the G4 eMac and G5 iMac and set the router for single band 802.11n. You will end up with better networking performance for every computer in the house, including your new iPad.

  11. Not to state the obvious, but to all the rocket scientists demanding some admission of guilt on Apple’s part, maybe you could step back, shut up and learn a thing or two first. I imagine it is an OS or firmware issue that they will end up addressing, but first they have to REPRODUCE it themselves before they can confirm it is an issue and begin the process of addressing it with an update. This is not some 5 second process to be done haphazardly. If an update is needed I have no doubt it will be coming soon, but if you just rush something out the door you run the risk of making things FAR worse. Let’s just wait a couple of days and see if Apple releases an update that addresses this issue. While not desirable you almost always see a few issues on a rev. 1.0 product as it is rolled out to the masses and is exposed to every possible network/usage environment.

    In short, Apple has led the industry in customer satisfaction and customer support for several years now and I highly doubt they have decided to quit supporting their products immediately after the iPad release. If a fix is warranted I’m sure it will come, the question is will it take 1 day or 5 days, but it will come.
