RUMOR: Next-gen iPhone to feature Apple’s A4 SoC, second front-facing camera, multitasking, more

Regarding Apple’s next-gen iPhone, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber dishes up the following:

• A4-family CPU system-on-a-chip
• 960 × 640 double-resolution display
• Second front-facing camera
• Third-party multitasking in iPhone OS 4

MacDailyNews Note: Multiple little birdies have also been telling us to varying degrees about all four of the points above (not to mention the LED flash); more than one of the tiny flying rumor mongers claim the last point (third-party multitasking in iPhone OS 4) to be a “virtual certainty,” “a lock,” and a “sure bet” among other clichés. If our feathered friends are chirping the truth, it would quite likely mean third-party multi-tasking for all iPhone OS devices; not just iPhone, but iPad and iPod touch (although the latter may have to wait for its own A4 come autumn).

  1. As I read Gruber’s very short note, he does not have any information that any of the features above will be on any new phone. MDN’s abstract implies that he does, but that is misleading. Gruber is responding to the recent Wall Street journal’s piece about a pending Verizon phone and is simply using the features listed above by MDN as examples of widely spread rumors that, like the Verizon phone, are completely unsubstantiated. As Gruber says, all that is known is that there will be a new iPhone this summer.
