Apple granted major iPad patents just prior to April 3 launch

Apple Online Store“Just prior to Apple’s debut of the iPad in January, they were granted a major patent for a Proximity Detector for Tablets,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“Today, history appears to want to repeat itself by granting Apple major patents just five days prior to the official iPad launch,” Purcher reports. “This patent is a whopper being that it covers accelerometers specifically in tune with multiple applications relating to games, maps, 3D Surround Sound speakers and more.”

Purcher reports, “Apple’s second major win is for utilizing multiple broadband antennas for the iPhone and iPad 3G. Someone in Cupertino is smiling this morning – that’s for sure.”

  1. Granting a patent and making it enforceable are two different things. I really don’t see the difference between a tablet and a smartphone. As everyone says, it’s just a big iPod touch, and they’re right, it is. It’s brilliant, and there’s no need to grant the same patent for a larger device, if it’s the same concept. Unless there’s some fundamental difference, I think allowing patents for a different size is silly, as the size is arbitrary. What if I call my 5″ screen, a new category, can I patent how I can use accelerometers with it? See? It’s silly.

  2. Apple clearly understands that all a patent is, is the right to sue! They know it wont stop copy cats but it and a 40 billion dollar war chest does give them the grounds to sue these companies into the weeds!
