Apple today released Mac OS X v10.6.3 Update which is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:
• improve the reliability and compatibility of QuickTime X
• address compatibility issues with OpenGL-based applications
• address an issue that causes background message colors to display incorrectly in Mail
• resolve an issue that prevented files with the # or & characters in their names from opening in Rosetta applications
• resolve an issue that prevented files from copying to Windows file servers
• improve performance of Logic Pro 9 and Main Stage 2 when running in 64-bit mode
• improve sleep and wake reliability when using Bonjour wake on demand
• address a color issue in iMovie with HD content
• improve printing reliability
• resolve issues with recurring events in iCal when connected to an Exchange server
• improve the reliability of 3rd party USB input devices
• fix glowing, stuck, or dark pixels when viewing video from the iMac (Late 2009) built-in iSight camera

I hope it fixes whatever has been making Dictionary crash all the time. System Preferences crashes about every other I launch it, too. Really annoying. Has anyone else been having these issues with Snow Leopard?

I’ve never had any crashing issues with Snow Leopard, nor have I heard of any widespread complaints. Would advise downloading the 10.6.3 combo updater from the Apple website and installing manually rather than relying on Software Update.
Overall the last version has been super slow for me. Constant spinning beachball, Safari crashes daily, even after clearing cache.

had a similar problem. Was a font conflict. Do a search on this issue and you should find the solution.

Ditto with never having crashing issues with Snow Leopard, particularly with Dictionary and System Preferences. Could it be a font problem with Dictionary, and have you validated fonts with FontBook? (Just guessing.) The only thing I could imagine messing with System Preferences is a corrupted preferencepane, maybe a third-party one, though I’ve got several (FlipForMac WMV, Glimmer Blocker, Growl, Perian and SizzlingKeys) and I’ve still never had it crash on me.

Going off my experience running 12 macs at work, there are no problems with SL unless you migrate from an old machine to new one – you are better starting afresh with the new one.

alansky: Thanks for your comment. These Dictionary and System Preferences crashes are the only ones I’ve ever had with Snow Leopard, and they have only been occurring within the past few weeks. I’ll try updating the slow way this time, though, as per your suggestion, albeit not for a day or two. Just like I’m not a x.0 kind of person, I also generally wait a couple days before doing any OS update just to make sure no widespread problems have been reported.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I hadn’t thought it might be font-related, so will check that.

The problem is with your mail provider – the remote server is declining your stored passwords (and usually it’s the server’s fault).
I agree that there should be an option “I know the server has just screwed up – ignore & retry” instead of having to input the password again and again…
It was imminent that it would be.
I ran Validate Fonts in FontBook and it found 37 “minor” problems. Would this automatically mean I should delete all of them? I can certainly live without a few of them, but most of them are standard (and often Web-safe) fonts like Ariel, Verdana, Times New Roman, etc. I don’t want to delete those. Any suggestions on how I should proceed?

so… installed the 10.6.3 update, all went well – rebooted my Mac Pro and now my second monitor doesn’t work at all. gets no input from the second DVI port on my video card. i’m pissed, have TONS of work to do today and can’t be bothered trying to troubleshoot this ridiculous issue.
anyone else have this problem? anything i can try? i’ve tried rebooting, removing the re-inserting the video card, switching monitor cables – both monitors work just fine, but only one at a time, and only from the first DVI port on my video card.
any help would be appreciated…. dual monitor users, BEWARE before updating to 10.6.3.

Which email provider are you using? I’ve used IMAP/POP3 in Mail.app for years across several providers and never experienced the problem you’re describing.
mine won’t install
