Sources: iPad could outsell iPhone in first 3 months; Apple still working on TV show deals

Steal of the Day - Updated Daily!“Since the iPad became available for pre-order last Friday, Apple has sold hundreds of thousands of the device, say people familiar with the matter,” Yukari Iwatani Kane and Sam Schechner report for The Wall Street Journal. “One of these people said Apple could sell more iPads in its first three months than it sold iPhones in the three months after the smart phone’s debut.”

“The company is still negotiating with media companies for a price cut on TV shows that people can download onto the device, said people familiar with the matter,” Kane and Schechner report.

Kane and Schechner report that “nailing down the content has proven difficult as some potential collaborators weigh the advantages of working with Apple against the potential threats to their current sources of revenue, these people add… The last-minute discussions show the complexities that Apple and Chief Executive Steve Jobs are facing in creating a networked multimedia device, which has pushed the company to pare back some of its initial intentions for the iPad’s release.”

  1. The iPad has so many awesome things going for it, if Apple can pull off moderately priced TV, that will just be another huge feature to add to the list.

One quote in here is a little unnerving though. “nailing down the content has proven difficult as some potential collaborators weigh the advantages of working with Apple against the potential threats to their current sources of revenue.”

That pretty much sums up what has kept the Apple TV from greatness. Hopefully Apple can strike a deal with content providers. Once it’s on the iPad, then it’s just a matter of time until they sign deals for Apple TV content. This will be huge.

    Hopefully sooner than later.

  2. I would love to just be able to view movies that are on my home DVR. They could be mirrored to my AppleTV and then be available to my MacBook, iPhone and iPads (when I get them later this year. I want several iPads.)

Open up access to media that I clearly have the right to view. If it is on my DVR and I can see it on my TV, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM LETTING ME SEE IT ON A SMALLER SCREEN WHERE AND WHEN I WANT TO SEE IT! (Sorry about that.) Are they afraid I could see their commercials in the kitchen or back yard?

  3. Personally, I’m optimistic about what can be done with the iPad as a “publication viewer”.

If the VIV Mag interactive demo is anything to go by (

), I expect great things from upstart “eMags” who can teach a thing or two to the established. Indeed, tablets should be considered a gateway to the kind of media experience readers/viewers periodicals want. For example, fashion magazines like GQ, Elle and Vogue.

  4. Instead of selling them for $1.99 Apple should try to rent tv shows for .99 cents. I buy tv shows from time to time, but I rarely go back and watch them again. If there was something I really wanted to watch again, like a cooking show with good recipes for instance, then I would buy it for $1.99. No problem.
