Apple Board member Al Gore gets 10,387 more Apple options

Mac Sale FREE Shipping“Al Gore took his lumps at Apple’s shareholders meeting Thursday,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“Sitting in the front row with the other outside directors, he had to bite his tongue as two pro-environment proposals were voted down and a gadfly named Shelton Ehrlich took the mic to call him a ‘laughingstock,'” Elmer-DeWitt reports. “‘The glaciers have not melted,’ Ehrlich said, referring to Gore’s frequent warnings about the effects of global warming. ‘If his advice he gives to Apple is as faulty as his views on the environment then he doesn’t need to be re-elected.'”

“But Gore is amply rewarded for serving on Apple’s board,” Elmer-DeWitt reports. “Last year he received in cash and stock options the equivalent of $436,372. The 10,000 options he was granted in 2008 are now worth nearly $750,000.”

Elmer-DeWitt reports, “And according to an SEC filing published Friday, he has just received another 9,397 options — more than any other director — in addition to 990 restricted shares. Net value of last week’s haul, including those restricted shares: more than $227,000 at Apple’s closing price of $204.62… Gore has done well for himself since he left public service. In 2000, his net worth was estimated to be between $1 and $2 million. By 2007, it had reportedly reached $100 million.”

  1. It’s never been clear to me what Gore is doing for Apple to merit such largess. (I should only be so lucky to get such a gig.) I used to be a supporter – voted for him and Bill twice, and have an autographed copy of his “Earth in the Balance”. But much of his “science” is without foundation, many of his claims have already been debunked, and his hypocrisy is palpable.

He shows how far he has moved from the centrist DLC to the populist spewing dangerous nonsense in this past weekend’s NY Times op-ed.

  2. Hi Fact Checker, I have know idea what you are trying to say. As a fully educated engineer, I see the stupidity in almost every statement that is made about Global Warming. And if I was interested in arguing about Global Warming, I bet that there is a place on the WWW for that.

Again, do you or anyone on this message board have any idea why this idiot is on Apple’s board?

  3. Jersey_Trader,

Gore is a partner in the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB)..

Yes, the same KPCB that launched $100 million iFund for Apple iPhone application developers back in March 2008.

So, Gore’s presence has likely done at least something beneficial for Apple, although he does seem to do quite a lot of nothing for Apple most of the time (see computer summits in the Democrat Obama admin where Apple isn’t invited, but Microsoft is, for example).

  4. It may be snowing a lot on the east coast, but it has snowed very little up here in the Interior of Alaska. And it has been a relatively mild winter. That means the glaciers and permafrost aren’t getting much bigger this year and this summer they will melt even more than they have been, thus the spiraling continues as the permafrost and ice shelves shrink.
Snow, or lack of it, in the Lower 48 is not an indicator of global weather conditions. Has it been crazy cold down there? Nope, just snowier. Snow comes from humid air, warm air holds more humidity. Odd, huh?

  5. Gore & his buddy Blood. Can you imagine? Blood & Gore. He’s just better at the game of politics than most of his partners in crime. People get into public service, (that’s got to be the best oxymoron – with emphasis on ‘moron’), so that they can BS, lay around at our expense, and get rich. You’ll notice that nearly all congresspeople, get really rich will ‘serving”. How is it that most of them get to be millionaires on their salaries? Could it be that they cheat and steal?

    Apple should jettison this POS.

  6. I don’t want to rub it in but the planet sure got a whole lot warmer when Canada beat the US in men’s gold medal hockey yesterday.

I’m sure that contributed to global warming.

  7. Thank you Fred Mertz for explaining how he got his foot in the door. I wish they would push him and everyone else that has no purpose there today, out the door.

I too noticed that Al Gore did not get Apple an invitation at that time, but Microsoft and I think HP were there. Apple may not have been invited because of Al Gore. They know the real story about that idiot. We are only starting to see the real evidence of the scam being documented. Apple should also get as far away as possible from this GW scam while they can. Steve Jobs works to hard on Apple’s reputation to have Al Gore’s BS all over it.

  8. ron,

Mate, these guys don’t go into office and get rich…they get richer.

But, how could one become a millionaire on their salary?

Well let me see. If you pay me some odd $250K a year, and pay for all of my living expenses, travel and my healthcare whilst I sit around and debate whether or not that you deserve healthcare for a decade or so I imagine that I’d be able to put a few quid away too.

  9. Andy in Alaska, it is not just the snow, the summers are colder in New Jersey and else where. Andy, if they got to do every thing the the GW idiots wanted to do at any expense, they would only change 1.5° in 100 years. I know that in Alaska there are months that you don’t see what really changes and controls the variations in the climate, but the sun is 99 percent of the changes.

If you all want to drop the temperature, just drop some bunker busting bombs down the active volcanos and watch the temperatures drop. Here come the next ice age!

    Idiots.

  10. I wish someone — ANYONE — in the press would get the option concept correct.

There is a strike price associated with options!

Al Gore was not given $227,000. To even imply that is just plain stupid.

I don’t know what the strike price of the options are, but if they are $200 then the value of the 10,387 options is really only about $47,000. A nice paycheck for being on Apple’s board, but no where near the $227,000 people are yelling about. Note that with the stock options fiasco a few years back that strike price will be very close to the price the stock was trading at when those options were granted.

Also there were/are strike prices for all the other options. Al Gore did not make $436,372 or $750,000. At most he made a fraction of that.

No wonder people are claiming huge amounts for his net worth. If you think he made nearly a quarter of a million dollars in Apple stock option grants this year, your math would certainly make him look that rich.

Can one of these “journalists” tell my banker that I’m worth a lot more than I am? (Of course I’ll still tell the IRS the truth so I will not have to pay taxes on income that has never existed — and will never exist.)

  11. How is it that MDN’s residents neo-con dipshits* read how Al Gore was given more shares than any other member of Apple’s board of directors, and yet have it still not dawn on them that APPLE IS A LIBERAL COMPANY?

The reason that POS hasn’t been jettisoned is because Apple doesn’t think he’s a POS. Judging from the 10,387 shiny new options they just handed him, Apple obviously considers Al Gore somewhat of a goldenboy.

But apparently the neo-con Mac users(now there’s an oxymoron with emphasis on ‘moron’) can somehow block out all knowledge that APPLE IS A LIBERAL COMPANY.

Which actually isn’t too surprising, since they’re experts at blocking out knowledge in general.

So while they hate Al Gore to bits, they never spend a picosecond thinking about what the fact that he works there even means.

Would you knuckledraggers ever hire Al Gore? Hell no! Would Apple? Yeah. They did. Doesn’t that SAY ANYTHING TO YOU?

    Dear God.

This is all because Rush Limbaugh’s a Mac user, isn’t it?

*By ‘neo-cons’ I do not mean Republicans. Two very different things.

    MW: center. Irony.

  12. Only the most unsophisticated readers would imagine that snowstorms in the US translate to proof that global warming isn’t happening… after all, greater severity of weather was one of the main predictions of global warming. in other parts of the world the weather has become dryer. in australia parts of the continent have been in drought for some years, while coastal regions have been battered by cyclones and floods. i feel sorry for al gore – americans seem to reject anything which might require them to be more responsible in their behaviour…

  13. I said this in a previous post, back when the ‘first’ Al Gore story hit, but it bears repeating:

Regardless of whatever the Sun may or may not be doing, our best evidence (primarily in the form of ice cores, taken at different points all over the world) strongly suggests that human industrial activity is affecting our climate. It’s really ridiculous to be arguing otherwise, simply because there is no countervailing evidence to back up such an argument, making it pure opinion.

But what kills me the most about those who fervently want to believe either that our burning of fossil fuels is irrelevant to this change in climate, or that the change is not happening, is that they typically justify such head-in-the-sand thinking by saying something like ’30 or 40-some years of obvious warming is not NEARLY enough time (geologically speaking) to prove it to be a trend’. And yet, this ONE WINTER of cold temperatures is MORE than enough to disprove it.

Truly and without doubt, the hardest of the hard core conservatives in this country are the most hypocritical and intellectually stupid part of the human race.

    MDN magic word = tried

As in: “I once tried talking to and about these people as if they were adults, but it has always proved pointless. They are children, who just can’t stand to be wrong. Ever.”

  14. I don’t know if everything they say is true @ global warming, but I do know this: oil puts us at the mercy of unstable Governments and if you park your car in the garage, close the garage door, start your car and stay in said garage you will die. So, how can all that crap going into the air be any good?. Far right death panel believers please respond.

  15. Man o man there is a lot of anger against Gore and global warming here.

People chill out (global warming pun intended)

Learn to relax…..did I mention that Canada won the gold metal in men AND women’s hockey heheheh

  16. Al’s entire career has been about scaring the public with one menace after another, with the constant theme of “The world is in peril! Give me power, you impudent peasants!” It started with Tipper’s little kangaroo court about “obscenity” in song lyrics, and frankly, that should have ended Al’s support in the Democratic party if Democrats cared one bit about the first amendment.

The really eye-opening thing about Al though, is the way he obviously doesn’t buy his own propaganda line about AGW. He flies around in private jets, he lives in a house that draws enough power for a small apartment block, and he buys real estate in areas that he tells us are in imminent danger of being covered by the rising ocean.

I never saw any merit on Al Gore’s part that would justify him sitting on Apple’s board of directors, but as far as I’m concerned, if SJ wants a pet politician, he can have a pet politician. I just wish he’d picked one that wasn’t quite so slimy.

  17. Lots of questioning what Gore has done. Does that mean each of the other Board members have been so productive that everyone of the complainers can name a dozen things each of the others have done to help Apple? Or is Gore the only one whom anyone is questioning. It’s fine to question someone, but those questions should be the same as go to everyone else.

So, who knows what the other Board members have done for Apple?

Really, I suspect few, if any, of the complainers have ever sat on a board themselves. Why would they even have an idea as to how a board -any board- operates anyway.

  18. Al Gore is Jor-el, and the conservative morons who run this site are in dire need of reprogramming. Cut the crap with the politics. You’d rather Sarah Palin be on Apple’s board? I’d switch to Windows.

Since when is science a political issue? When you’re too ignorant to understand science. Going to hell makes more sense.

  19. auramac,” You’d rather Sarah Palin be on Apple’s board? I’d switch to Windows.”

I’d pay your fare out of here. Might even give you a ZUNE as a going away gift.

  20. “Canada Free Press” proves only one thing: That there are just as many stupid ass-hats in Canada (per capita) than there are in the US and the rest of the world.
When I realized that, I got a lot less smug. – Though when we won the gold(s) in Hockey. I got my “smug” back! Woo Hoo.
