MeToo: Nokia and Intel plan new ‘MeeGo’ platform in attempt to catch up with Apple

Apple Online Store “Nokia and Intel on Monday unveiled plans for a new operating system to power sophisticated smartphones and netbook computers, in an attempt to catch up with Apple and Google,” Andrew Parker and Paul Taylor report for The Financial TImes. “The new platform, called MeeGo, could enable Nokia to improve its weak position in high-end smartphones, where the world’s largest mobile maker has faced criticism that it lacks a handset to rival Apple’s iPhone. The platform could also help Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker, to finally push its way into the mobile market after several failed initiatives.”

MacDailyNews Take: MeGoo? Sorry, MeeGo? They should’ve just named it YAMOS (Yet Another Mobile Operating System).

Parker and Taylor continue, “MeeGo will combine Nokia’s Maemo and Intel’s Moblin, which are both Linux-based operating systems, and the first devices using the new platform are expected in the second half of this year,” Parker and Taylor report. “Like Android, MeeGo software will be freely available to manufacturers of smartphones and other consumer electronics devices. Software developers will also be able to use MeeGo on an open source basis, so that they can build applications that run on any devices featuring the operating system.”

MacDailyNews Take: Stuffing the marketplace full of superfluity only benefits Apple.

Parker and Taylor continue, “Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia’s chief executive, told the Financial Times that MeeGo would be likely to feature on a broader range of devices than Android, which has just started to be used on netbooks as well as smartphones… Mr Kallasvuo denied the creation of MeeGo would kill off Symbian, the company’s longstanding operating system for smartphones, which some analysts believe falls short of Apple’s iPhone OS platform…”

  1. Why MeeGo doesn’t conflict symbian os as Nokia’s chief said? I can only see big conflict unless they plan to dump symbian in the future but then what’s the point of porting symbian to open source recently?

    Another curiousity:
why don’t companies just use Darwin (the apple os kernel) but build their Apis, other things and layers on top just like apple did. Darwin is open source and it’s free right?

  2. Apple succeeds because it is one company, integrating (and controlling) the hardware and software to work as one product. Because of this advantage, Apple can follow one strategy, have one agenda, react quickly when needed, and ultimately give customers what they want.

Almost everyone else now seems resigned to follow the opposite strategy – first Microsoft, then Google, and now this Nokia-Intel partnership – which is the old “you do the hardware and we do the software (because we are lazy)” approach. In consumer electronics, this strategy is ineffective as a counter to Apple. The only player left, trying to play Apple’s game, is Palm (and they are too far behind at this point to really matter).

  3. “Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo… told the Financial Times that MeeGo would be likely to feature on a broader range of devices than Android,”

And that’s the problem with Android. So this will be worse.

  4. Meanwhile, in other news, Schwinn Bicycle Co. announced plans to offer optional strap-on bottle rockets on their entire lineup in hopes of catching up with Ferrari on the racing circuit.

  5. @ken1w

in my opinion, both can work. Apple’s vertical integration and the software co nd harwares co partnerships.

Google’s case with htc was pretty good, not talking about customers service experience but in terms of hrdware and software integration. It was good.

Microsoft also put up a good strategy, ie to narrow down the specifications for device manufacturers to better integration.

I can see both approaches can work well.

  6. MeeGo, amigo, WTF?!? Why can’t these clowns come up with some human-sounding product names?

I would NEVER pay for a Zune just because of the name alone. Same with MeeGo home now. Wow, corporate marketing standards have really slipped.

    Peace.
