Apple begins iTunes Store countdown to 10 billion songs; win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card

Apple has begun counting down to the 10 billion songs downloaded milestone for iTunes Store:

One huge milestone for music

Help iTunes reach 10 billion song downloads, and you could win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

iTunes changed the way you buy music, making songs and albums available for download, day or night. Seven years later, we’re about to celebrate our biggest milestone for music, yet — 10 billion songs downloaded. Buy a song, and if it’s the 10 billionth download, you could win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. It’s our way of saying thanks.

(No purchase necessary to win. The 10 Billion Songs Countdown Promotion is open only to entrants who are 13 years of age or older at time of entry, and a legal resident of the fifty United States or the District of Columbia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada (excluding the Province of Quebec), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom, if available. See the iTunes Store front page in your country for details. Limit 25 entries per person per day. No purchase necessary. Must be 13+ and reside in the participating country. This contest ends after download of the 10 billionth song. The winner will be listed online at apple.com/itunes/10-billion-song-countdown/ within approximately ten days following the end of the Promotion Period.)

The numbers are flipping quickly, but the countdown currently stands at 9,877,672,110 as of the time this article was posted.

  1. Actually, under the terms of her court mandated conservatorship, she only gets a $500/week allowance… but yeah, I hear where you are coming from…

Although she isn’t the only facepalm-worthy act out there.. not by a long shot

  2. No purchase necessary.

“Federal Trade Commission law relating to games of chance; contest rules must include No Purchase Necessary otherwise the contest becomes a lottery and thus illegal.
Sweepstakes are generally permitted in most states as long as participants are not required to pay for the chance to win.”

See, only the government can run a lottery.

  3. Hey Music Industry! That’s 10 Billion songs that you got paid for instead of getting squat! Are you listening?

    …Bueller? …Bueller?

I know at least personally that if iTunes wasn’t there I wouldn’t have paid for even half as much music as I have, and that’s mostly down to the Apple ecosystem that no-one’s even come close to approaching yet. That no other company seems to get, at all.

And I only buy the 99cents or less songs; any songs they try to charge me 1.29 for get downloaded elsewhere, thank you very much.

  4. “Dear Lord, Please don’t let it be Britney Spears.”

Dude, this is the year that the Black Eyed Peas won three grammys for such inspired lyrics as ‘Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Saturday and Sunday’

    Dark times indeed.

  5. Report: Zune Bazzar Marketplace announces that they are starting their store countdown also. The swap meet of digital music download is nearing two dozen songs. The countdown page is currently stuck at 22 1/2 ( 1/2 because someone BSOD and still trying to finish the download ) and will soon hit 24. The prize will be unprecedented. The winner gets to receive an autograph signature of Ballmer and a sample vile of his Sweat attached to a necklace. So the winner can be proud to wear his DNA everywhere he/she goes.

  6. @ Asymco

Thanks for the graphs. I was hoping someone would post an up to date one.

The trend for music is good since overall the sales rate is increasing.

It’s not surprising that apps are being DLed at a higher rate. First you can only get apps from the App store (except for jailbroken iPhones). Second a lot of DLed apps are free. Apple do offer free music sometimes but it is a low percentage compared to apps.

In the last year 4 BB songs have been DLed. That’s $2.8BB for the music industry and 1.2BB for Apple. In revenue terms that is not bad for Apple, although we don’t exactly know the margins on that profit wise.

  7. unless apple’s going to turn iTunes into an Amazon competitor…..
WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO WITH $10,000 WORTH OF MEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Actually I’d set-up a gift card system and cash-out the $10,000

  8. 10,000 bucks? I will surely get sick of music if I had to bust all that dough on music on the lame and bloated itunees store. Rather stick with Zune marketplace instead. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  9. I am very sick and tired of the Quebec government trying to make sure I can’t enter any contests by creating massive roadblocks all the time. I was all excited about looking up the contest, and it’s, once again, a waste of time. I hope the Régie des Loteries et des Courses burns in hell.
