“Apple’s new iPad debuts a new VGA-style video output option, a first for the company’s mobile device lineup,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider.
“Like the existing iPhone and iPod touch, the iPad can output video via the same composite or component video cables to present standard definition, analog video with roughly 480 lines of resolution,” Dilger reports. “The iPad’s new VGA-connector option delivers PC style video at the device’s native 1024×768 resolution. Existing iPhone and iPod models won’t work with the new VGA cable, as they aren’t designed to support higher resolution outputs than they can display.”
Dilger reports, “The iPad gets the new VGA output option primarily to support video projectors, which will allow business users to present Keynote presentations directly from the device.”

But does it come with Flash and a matte screen? No? OMG. The Apocalypse is at hand.
And I can’t listen to Pandora while watching spankwire since there’s no flash or multitasking?
What the hell am I supposed to do if I can’t masturbate while listening to obscure electronica bands?
And don’t forget it is not widescreen. Why should I bother with Keynote when the iPad is only 4:3?
“Existing iPhone and iPod models won’t work with the new VGA cable…”
But will the iPad work with the existing iPhone to component video cable?
It’s gratyfying to know I’m not alone in my extreme annoyance with a certain Rtard ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
It’s simple. The handheld mini projectors are kicking off in the market.
P. S. I bet the adaptor works with 4.0 on the iPhone.
“The iPad gets the new VGA output option primarily to support video projectors, which will allow business users to present Keynote presentations directly from the device.”
not only business users. i’m sure there will be plenty of academics who will like this feature, instead of having to connect their mac laptops to a projector.
It’d be nice if it supported DVI output as well, since I have a pretty nice DVI projector myself, but Analog is better than nothing.
I wanna be the first customer in my local PC World for one of these! I shall get it on Pay Next Year terms and settle in full one day before the settlement deadline and incur no charges.
People complaining so much about the iPad just don’t get it.
@Ron,
Not only is analog better than nothing, in some ways analog is even better than digital.
I am intending to buy this, but for projectors, 1024 x 768 is well below the current standards. It’s not likely the GPU won’t support 1080p, so something higher than this should have been offered, if just to have text come out sharper.
90% of corpo office presentation suite are build with projectors with a native XGA resolution with a VGA connector. This market will embrace the iPad since it is ready for it.
DVI and higher resolution will come mainstream. Apple can already adapt with its “Mini DisplayPort”.
This keep the cost down a little…
I will buy a iPad…
Gee, why in the world would Apple release a product that’s Dock Connector will continue to support hundreds of already existing accessories?
I don’t like VGA, but it makes perfect sense for Apple to make the iPad as compatible as possible with existing iOS products.
But i also want input.. Gimme input fer cryin’ out loud..
The people who don’t understand the iPad are the same ones who didn’t understand the iPhone when it first came out
This thing sucks.
An ereader should excel at one thing. Reading. I’ll pass.
Disclaimer:
The fact that I already own a Kindle and have spent hundreds on ebooks has not tainted my viewpoint in any way.
@Spark
PC users will like the 4:3 aspect ratio (typically, Windows apps have sported so many toolbars that already 1/3 of the screen is taken. That’s why wide screens aren’t really taking off in the Windows world.
Obsolete display format and output. Our office “projector” is now an HDTV with HDMI input. Heck, even DVI is old technology now with DisplayPort.
Sounds like Apple is adopting Dell’s approach in producing low cost junk based on yesterday’s technology in order to deliver cheap stuff to the masses. Is Michael Dell the new Apple CTO?
The naysayers are great. They’d be first in line to protest a product that cures cancer for all mankind just because they don’t like the way its name is spelled.
@ecrabb
Why would VGA be better the DVI? I find it’s harder to get colors accurate on VGA compared to DVI, and when you’re displaying color items it makes a difference.
Your input on Ipad VGA is as misleading as Apple’s
This is not like a VGA from a pc to a projector!
It is not WISIWIG.
Apples KEYNOTE demo is not even reproducable
The white board function does not begin to work.
Teachers beware.
Apple has missed the boat on this one.
