Apple and American Red Cross begin accepting Haiti relief donations through iTunes

“With tens of thousands feared dead following a devastating series of earthquakes in Haiti, Apple and the American Red Cross have begun accepting donations for aid and relief through the iTunes Music Store,” AppleInsider reports.

“Through a link featured on the front page of the store, customers can contribute (iTunes link) as little as $5, or as much as $200,” AppleInsider reports. “The donations are charged through users’ credit cards through iTunes, in the same manner a music or movie purchase would be charged.”

AppleInsider reports, “The contributions are essentially anonymous, as Apple will not reveal personal information of its users to the American Red Cross through the transactions. Those who give will receive an e-mail confirmation from the iTunes Store, which will be the only evidence of the donation for tax writeoff purposes.”

  1. Saw this on Apple’s page last night. Had my daughter mouse click the donation buttons. It brought a smile to her face. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  2. It says something about a (thankfully) small minority of Americans that they had no problem spending $1 trillion on an illegal war in a country half a world away, but begrudge adding even nominally to the $100 million (representing 0.01%) to help a country in the US’ backyard that is the victim of the capriciousness of the planet.

Please remember that Haiti, which barely functions as a state in the best of times, will slide into failed-state territory if the global community doesn’t help at a personal, NGO and governmental level: failed states drift into anarchy and misery and produce both political and economic refugee problems for all countries in their region including the US.

Anyone who can afford two bottles of wine in a week or a monthly premium cable TV subscription should dig in for $10: it is seriously the cheapest and best solution for Haiti, her people and her neighbors.

  3. MCCFR,
How could you possibly think that using logic or reason will work against the twisted political thinking here?

People believe the things people like Pat Robertson, Blen Geck and Parah Stalin say. There is no hope for them.

  4. However, what does the CEO of the American Red Cross make in salary? How much money have the taxpayers already given to the ARC this year? I’m curious. I was thinking Unicef for my $. Anyone have any other good suggestions?

  5. People like Rush Limbaugh and the scum who agree with him on the notion that “we’ve already given enough to Haiti” are subhuman filth that really ought to just be taken out back and shot.

I mean seriously, a humanitarian crisis of unimaginable proportion where real, severe human pain and suffering is happening and they’re saying not to give, talking about Obama and worried about their tax dollars.

Rarely have I seen such bald, flagrant, ugly greed in actual people and not just in movies.

For once I do believe in the simple conservative notion that there is good and evil in the world. Good guys and bad guys. These people are just shit, plain and simple.

I’m not saying this at all about Repubs or conservatives in general, for Christ’s sake even Sean Hannity has a donation link on his front page. And a lot of Christian organizations are leading the charge down there. Good for all of them. Used to be a time when something like this happened and no one cared about politics, we all just cared. Not so with these people, if you can call them that. The moral bankruptcy is just mind boggling.

Limbaugh can really just go ahead and die like the pig he is for all I care. And that’s an insult to pigs.

And what is it about MDN that brings this filth out from under their rocks? If I ran this site I’d be ashamed and embarrassed that these people have found a haven here.

  6. Raskol…

Until we come up with a triple-innoculation against stupidity, prejudice and greed, there will always be events (like now) where we have to draw a line in the sand against people (?) whose souls and intellects (again, ?) have become infected.

Decades ago, we were partially protected by the civility of broadcast media. Now – with the malignancy of some media channels who put rabble-rousing and profiteering above “the mission to explain” and social cohesion and opportuinist politicians that are willing to exploit those channels – that protection is no more.

    And we call this progress?

  7. @R2

You are your own judge. The verdict is up to you.

    However remember …

A cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

    And that …

None are so empty as those who are full of themselves.

    Yet …

When you dig another out of their troubles, you find a place to bury your own.

Real charity doesn’t care if it’s tax-deductible or not.

  8. I might add R2 that I donated to the Australian Salvation Army and Oxfam after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. (A disaster within a disaster) I initially thought why would I want to do that, America is the top dog, rich and powerful, but I realised that American status should not be the issue, PEOPLE are the issue.

Also, even though the Australian government gave Indonesia $1 Billion over five years in response to the 2004 Boxing day tsunami, I, like millions of others gave money in addition – and to put this in context, this is after the 2002 Bali bombings in Indonesia, killing 202 people, of which 88 were Australians and further it is also after the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta on 9 September 2004 killing 11 people, all Indonesians.

There is one word which may serve as a rule of practice for all one’s life – reciprocity. Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness. If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one. Don’t be yourself – be someone a little nicer.

  9. I still think that while we can all applaud Apple for making it easy to donate via iTunes, I would give them a lot more credit if they offered to match some percentage of the donation. I’ve seen nothing suggesting that Apple itself, which is doing very well these days, has contributed anything.

  10. @Sky_Lark

For every million dollars collected, the people of Haiti are likely to see maybe $50,000.

A cynic is typically someone who felt too much, kept his eyes open, now suffers from seeing too much truth.

  11. For all the American’s on here who are complaining about donating to a truly worthy cause, I’ll remember to not make a donation next time your asses get busted by hurricanes. I bet it’s a different story then.

You don’t want to donate, fine. But don’t come crying to the rest of the world when you need financial aid in a crisis.

I’m not singling out Americans, by the way, before I get a load of hate mail. This applies to everyone.

  12. I cannot believe the level of stupidity in some of the proceeding posts.

Limbaugh says something stupid, so that makes your equally stupid responses okay?

Alex – BTW – you DID single out Americans in your first sentence. If you did not want to, then you simply could have left the word out.

For those who could not have figured out how to donate before Apple stepped in JUST F’NG GOOGLE IT! I think the AMR has a website. I’ve been donating since the days you had to send a check via snail-mail.

Finally, the US and UN and NGO’s have spent several fortunes in Haiti over the last 20 years. Haiti will not be truly saved until the Haitian people decided they have had enough of the local corruption, and stand up for themselves.

  13. Are you Libs pathological liars or just horribly ignorant?

Limbaugh never discouraged donations. He said people should go through private channels like, specifically, the American Red Cross, not the govt which is much more wasteful and inefficient. It would seem Apple agrees with Rush.
