Valleywag offers up to $100,000 for Apple tablet photos, video, access

January Clearance Blowout ends 1/14“We’ve had enough of trying to follow all the speculation around Apple’s impending tablet — how it’ll work, its size, the name, the software and whether it will save magazines. We want answers, dammit! And we’re willing to pay,” Gabriel Snyder writes for Valleywag.

“Apple has said absolutely nothing about its tablet, but everyone expects it to be unveiled in San Francisco on Jan. 27,” Synder writes. “So, that gives you to two weeks to play in Valleywag’s Apple Tablet Scavenger Hunt: If you can find the first genuine photos, video or — the holy grail — the actual messiah machine itself before then and they’re exclusive to us, we’ll give you a cash prize.”

$10,000 – bona fide pictures
$20,000 – video of one in action
$50,000 – pictures or video of Steve Jobs holding one
$100,000 – to let us play with one for an hour

Snyder writes, “Anonymity of both the winners and losers is important to us: We’ll go to spycraft-level lengths to prevent anything being traced back to you. And, of course, found any other authentic evidence of the Apple Tablet that we didn’t mention? We’re interested.”

Jason Kincaid writes for TechCrunch, “It’s certainly a tempting offer (at least, more tempting than submitting leaked photos and getting zilch in return), but Valleywag may be on the wrong side of the law. We spoke to a lawyer about the legality of the bounty, who says that Apple could have a claim against Gawker/Valleywag for inducing breach of contract, since anyone who has their hands on the tablet is certainly under a nondisclosure agreement. This could result in tort damages, with potential for punitive damages.”

  1. More importantly… Valleywag offers up $100,000 for free advertising associated with their offer. Of course, if they were to actually obtain the photos and have to pay up, the price would still be worth it for the publicity!!

Anyone else getting freaked out by Al Gore staring at them every time you check in on MDN?

  2. Apple:

Issue failed prototypes and mockups to people you suspect of disloyalty.

Let them flood Valleywag with different versions of the device, all claiming to be the genuine article, all claiming the reward.

Let Valleywag get egg on their face publicly for getting their “exclusives” so badly wrong.

Have Legal sue Valleywag into oblivion for inducing breach of contract amongst the leakers.

Finally, have the leakers and their families killed.

    MW = “coming”

That last one is a little pushy don’t ya think? I mean who will remember the dead in shock and horror if we kill all of them?

Just mortally wound the family members and force the traitor to try dialing for help with a ” rel=”nofollow”>Nokia 3650

  4. This must be a first! I don’t remember anyone ever offering money for clandestine pictures of an unannounced, but roumored-about product.

This frenzy had certainly reached new heights. As annoyed as some people around Apple most certainly are (not wanting to spoil anything), I’m sure they are quite thrilled that the fever is so high.

There is no money in the world that can buy THAT kind of publicity.

  5. I was thinkn this amounts to corporate espionage myself, people today just seem to have the most idiotic ideas about what to do with their lives and free time – is reality tv to blame? Because this truly is a disturbing trend.
