[UPDATE: 5:10pm EST: The following article by Sajid Farooq for NBC Bay Area has been disproven by MacDailyNews. Please see: No, Woz did not ‘ditch’ his Apple iPhone for Google’s rebadged HTC ‘Nexus One’ – January 14, 2010 – 05:10 PM EST]
“Steve Wozniak may have once cut in line to get an iPhone. But now he’s moved on to a hotter gadget,” Sajid Farooq reports for NBC Bay Area.
MacDailyNews Take: Hotter? Farooq must be referring to operating temperature: Google rebadged HTC ‘Nexus One’ phone limps into market; only 20,000 units moved in first week – January 13, 2010
Farooq continues, “The cofounder of Apple — the company that made him millions — told NBC Bay Area a dirty little secret. He ditched the iPhone for Google’s Nexus One… Wozniak made his latest revelation with a coy laugh and without actually speaking the Google device’s name. Instead, when asked what his favorite gadget is, Wozniak said, ‘Well, it’s the latest one. It’s a non-Apple product, but it’s a gadget that just came out yesterday.’ There was no mistaking which gadget the former ‘Dancing With the Stars’ contestant was referring to — when he said it, the Nexus One was just one day old.”
MacDailyNews Take: Did Woz really “ditch” his iPhone. Nowhere can we find Woz saying such a thing. More likely, did the gadget-obsessed Woz simply picked up a Nexus One to try out and, barely one day into it, hadn’t yet realized its numerous shortcomings? Woz’s “favorite” gadget is, we’ll hazard a guess, his latest gadget.
Full article here.
MacDailyNews Take: Sigh. More ginned up half-truths. Typically, at any given time, Woz has more gadgets on him than most of us have ever owned. This whole thing sounds like a plant from Google PR. Of course, Google, which does no evil, would never do such a thing. Regardless of the motivation, it’s no wonder local TV is dying.
It would make sense for Apple people (I’m including Woz in the general sense) to try the Nexus One to see what the opposition are doing.
Unlike the dipstick in charge at Palm….
I like how a brand new device is compared to the existing iPhone. These smartphones are benching themselves against where Apple has been, not where they are going. The competition has to be given the roadmap to copy before they can make a device to compete against Apple.
Woz is going to test out any gadget he can get his hands on…
Hey, the press has gotten into the habit of lying and hyping Obama, so they’re directing their efforts to other mediocre upstarts like Google.
As always, they be jealous of distinct and individual – and expensive – quality.
@ RW:
No, they’re benchmarking themselves where Apple IS now, not has been. Google is trying to match the current iPhone or even outplay it. Hasn’t worked, but there are some specs which are better than the iPhones. However, overall experience is what matters most, unless you only need your phone to do one or two things very well and don’t care about the rest. That’s not what most smartphone users need.
Doesn’t Woz have something like four GPS devices in his car! Or is that on his Segway?
I saw an interview with Woz in which he said he loves to get whatever the newest gadget is and try it out. He owns several phones and several navigation systems for example. He has all of his navigation systems running at the same time on his dashboard in his car. I would hate to be on the road around the guys…talk about your distracted driver.
He basically just loves to try new stuff out and can afford to do so with lots of things.
@ Mike Caine:
If Apple wanted to see what Google was doing with Android, they could download it. Otherwise, there’s nothing special about the hardware, other than having a faster CPU and more memory.
Woz probably owns at least one of every gadget ever made. Of course he’ll get a Nexus. It shall be interesting to see what he is spotted in public using six months from now.
Congratulations… sale number 1.
Anyone that ditches an iPhone for an Android based phone really never used the iPhone and probably doesn’t need a smartphone. I had one client call yesterday to have me help her configure her new Nexus 1 for her e-mail.
I asked, “Why didn’t you talk to me before buying that phone? What possessed you to finally drop that Blackberry for the Nexus?”
She said, “Cause it works with Google and I like Google.”
Yes, Surely Woz tries out gadgets of all sorts..
However, this article states that Woz was asked what his FAVORITE gadget is…
It’s not a matter of whether or not he loves gadgets or has he seen/picked up the Nexus one two three etc. The question was what was his favourite gadget.
Oh yes Woz ditched his iphone and his Mac for a PC running Windows 7( it was His idea)! And Yes look up in the sky, its a bird, it’s a plane.. its a pig!
Farooqin’ idiot….
The man drives a segway for christ’s sake.. there’s your sign.
Woz loves gadgets. He’s got every navigator in his car. His favorite is always the latest so he can play with something new. Sheeesh, this is a known quirk of his.
@bizlaw
The current iphone is already an old one. It’s absolutely an Had been, we are going to see what Apple is and will be shortly.
@ Handsome Smitty –
You win the the contest for the most nonsensical, off-topic, anti-Obama rant of the day. Congratulations!
So Woz has just made Apple look bad. Good job Woz. If I remember correctly, your still employed by Apple. If this article is accurate perhaps you need to re-asses your loyalties and stop being employed by Apple.
Carefully worded there huh MDN? Lemme see you actually try to bad mouth the Woz. I dare you.
No way! A nerd with more money than he knows what to do with, buys the newest shiny toy?! Next thing you know, we’ll see a cop eating a donut, or a doctor playing golf.
From my experience, the people buying android devices are people who want an iPhone but don’t what to be on AT&T;. So they go with a weaker phone for what they perceive as a better network. Otherwise they would have gone with the iPhone
This from a rich guy who has 7 or 8 GPS units in his car? Of course he’ll try every phone out there. But I’m sure his iPhone will continue to be his primary phone.
Anyone noticed that mass number of Nexus One ads on this site? Irony.
