Apple’s tablet said to be ‘iPhone on steroids’ with ‘out of control’ multi-touch gestures

“One of our close Apple connects who haven’t steered us wrong dropped a little bit of information on us,” The Boy Genius reports.

• The tablet’s multi-touch gestures are “out of control.”
• It’s powered by an incredibly fast ARM CPU
• It runs on the iPhone kernel.
• The tablet is basically an “iPhone on steroids.”

MacDailyNews Note: In July 2008, we reported a rumor that Apple’s secret product is ‘MacBook touch’. Said our source — the same one who tipped us to wireless iTunes Store sales direct to iPod and iPhone a week before Apple debuted it — in staccato fashion:

Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too.

Our source has subsequently told us that “the SuperDrive will not be part of the finished devices, ‘It was just in some of the prototypes for various reason(s).'”

We view both “out of control” and “some sick shit” as positive descriptions.

  1. A while back Rip Ragged had a great thought–“Here’s what would be funnier than hell: Apple announces on 1/27 that after careful study, they’ve decided tablets are a load of crap and not a market they’re interested in pursuing. This, after every other company on the planet, including John Deere, Kimberly-Clark, and Pepsi-Cola, have rushed to market some kind of touchscreen tablet device, hoping to upstage Apple. http://rip-ragged.com/dross/
In a couple of weeks we will know more — maybe.

  2. Who wants an iPhone on steroids? The iPhone is fine as it is, just needs a few software enhancements like the ability to run more than one third party app at the same time and a higher resolution screen.

The tablet is beginning to sound like something Steve Jobs wouldn’t want at Apple: a product with no real purpose.

  3. @Rob

It would be hilarious. Somehow talk Steve Jobs into walking around in public with some sort of outlandish device for a day, and then sit back and watch the blogoshpere light up like a Christmas tree.

    Good times!

  4. ” For instance how long before the iPhone was originally announced did Apple confirm that there would be an event?”

iPhone was shown at MacWorld, which was held annually, so there was going to be an event, iPhone or not.

But what about Apple’s 1st nano surprise event? Wasn’t it like 5 days before the show?

Yep. Make it inexpensive enough to be an add on item for a computer purchase. Make it inexpensive enough to be an impulse item. Make it inexpensive enough so that a family might have more than one.

It is not meant to replace your notebook or desktop.
