Analyst on Apple’s rumored, unannounced tablet: It’ll cost Apple $347.23 in parts

Christmas PD5FM $10 discount“Here’s a neat trick. In a report to clients Wednesday, Susquehanna Financial’s Jeffrey Fidacaro published an estimate of how much Apple is spending to build a device that hasn’t been announced, never mind shipped,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Forbes.

MacDailyNews Take: Now we’ve seen it all.

Elmer-DeWitt continues, “Vaporware issues aside, it’s not that big a stretch, thanks to the teardown experts at iSuppli who pegged the bill of materials for a 16GB iPhone 3GS at $180.”

MacDailyNews Take: No, Phil, it’s a huge stretch. Sheesh.

Elmer-DeWitt continues, “Using that a starting point, Fidacaro threw in the extra cost of a larger screen, bigger battery etc. and came out with a total of $347.23, as detailed in the schedule below the fold.”

Full article, with the ludicrous individual component cost breakdown, here.

MacDailyNews Take: The problem with some people today is that they have no G.D. patience. Relax. Anticipate Responsibly™. There’s no need to get silly.

  1. And the teardown cost of the iMac i9 (which hasn’t even been rumored about, let alone announced because I just made it up) is $692.78.

See, this is fun! Anyone can do it! Now, can I get a well paid job anal-ist?

Some people will do ANYTHING for hits…

  2. I wonder — was there this much certainty about announcement dates, launch dates, cost breakdowns, feature sets, etc. being thrown about before iPhone launched? It seems that people are more confident about facts surrounding the tablet than they were about iPhone. At this rate, by the time the 27th rolls around, there’ll be no surprises left. Assuming any of this is accurate.

  3. Bigger screen, fairly obvious. Bigger battery, durn well better be. How about a better camera? A (much) better processor? More SD? Maybe just take the internals of the MBA, trim them a bit, and go from THERE? That would certainly offer a better approximation of the content!
Assuming, of course, that there is a product to contain the content. It would be easier to price the screen if you knew its size … 9″? 13″? And the price of the CPU would be easy, once you had a clue as to what it was.
I’m thinking Apple will eventually announce a Tablet model. If only to shut down all this <strike>static</strike> supposition. I can see them being amused at the first hundred or so rumors, then getting tired of the whole thing. Oh. Wait. That moment must have passed more than a year ago!
