Analyst: Apple iPhone coming to Verizon

“A Verizon iPhone is coming but may not have the world roaming some users would want, Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar claims today,” Electronista reports.

“After contacting Apple’s suppliers, the researcher believes Qualcomm has landed a deal to produce a CDMA iPhone but that it won’t be a dual-mode phone with both CDMA and GSM and consequently can’t leave North America with cellular service intact,” Electronista reports.

“Kumar asserts that Apple had originally asked for a dual chip but allegedly wasn’t happy with the results, instead opting for a more conventional design. It’s not said what triggered the purported disappointment, though dual-network phones have often had significant if sometimes artificial limitations in their frequency support,” Electronista reports.

MacDailyNews Take: As we said earlier: “iPhone OS devices will be on carriers other than AT&T in the U.S. this year.”

  1. There’s a big potential market on Verizon, me included. Steve Jobs is a practical guy who ultimately wants to make the most money and expose his devices to the biggest markets.

  2. As others have noted… Too many commercials showing web surfing while talking on the phone for them to ever release a phone without this capability!! I’m guessing an iSlate on Verizon… But not an iPhone.

  3. Does this not sound just like all the predictions of the late 90s that Apple was doomed to failure and would be going out of business any … day … now? Predicting the iPhone will show up on Verizon’s holy network is in vogue, evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.

Also … we all know how Apple works. Do they really think Apple would make deals with suppliers that would allow random people to call up and ask “say, how many GSM/CDMA capable chips did you sell them for the mythic Verizon iPhone?” Cuz if you believe that, I’ve got a deal on a bridge in NYC that you can’t beat!

  4. I’m sure ATnT will be more than happy to allow Apple to break their exclusive 5-year contract so that Verison can have the iPhone on their network in the US.

    Riiiiiiiiight.

The contract ends in 2012. Verizon ain’t gettin’ the iPhone any sooner. iCal that, MDN.

  5. I’m still highly skeptical regarding the rumors of a Verizon iPhone. It just doesn’t seem to fit with anything that Apple or Verizon have done in the past year or more. Why would Verizon run a class-leading product (the iPhone) down if they planned on hosting a version of it within the next six to twelve months? Besides, Verizon has never shown any inclination that they truly believe that they screwed up by passing on the iPhone the first time around, or that they are willing to make anything close to the major concessions that AT&T made to get the iPhone. Verizon apparently wants to maintain their stranglehold on handset functionality and the marketing of apps, ringtones, etc.

It is possible, however, that Verizon might host a different Apple product (such as a tablet computer with a 3G data link) that falls outside of any AT&T exclusivity agreement. I am not saying that it is likely, but it is certainly possible. A tablet computer, for instance, would essentially be an enlarged iPod touch with a few things added – 3G data I/O, GPS, magnetometer, possibly a mini displayport. I would actually like to see those things added to the iPod touch, as well.

  6. If 4% of AT&T;customers are on iPhones, and those 4% use 40% of AT&T;’s data. I can’t wait for this “super system” of verizon’s to bog down with the rush of iPhone users they will get. Who knows, if they both get them it may jam the whole darn system and nobody’s will work. Verizon turned the iPhone down once, and with that AT&T;probably didn’t think they would go over. Verizon knows how popular it is now and nothing but total success will be tolerated anything else will be a failure on their part.

  7. If Apple comes to Verizon it will be a dual mode CDMA/GSM device. The radio is supposed to be invisible to the user. If it’s not, Apple has inventory complexity for no good reason. Apple is not a mobile phone company and the iPhone is not a mobile phone. It happens to be able to make phone calls. Apple is not about to set itself up to get whipped around by the carriers because of desperation to sell more units. It sells units because customers want them.

OBTW, a dual mode CDMA/GSM device will work with all carriers, at least the ones Apple deems worthy. I’m hoping for Sprint. They’ve shown a few glimmers of getting it.

  8. Apple will not make a CDMA phone.

Now the Islate/pad/tablet, I can see these being ‘unlocked for all carriers. That’s where apple will probably have the GSM/CDMA radio. I bet all the major one ATT&T;Verizon, T-mobile sprint, All have will glady sell any of their existing Customers a ‘data plan’ to accommodate the times you are a way from Wifi. You may pay a hefty sum, but it will be an adjunct to your existing contract.

The fact that the Islate thingy will be larger it wi will be easier to design a dual chip around that and more space for internal attenna

No Steve Jobs is not trying to make the most money. It is common knowledge that he is a perfectionist and wants Apple to make the most perfect products possible.

Why couldn’t he do both? Produce a perfect product that makes lots of money with lots of new customers?

  10. The likelihood of 2 iPhones- One crippled by Verizon’s pitiful network that can’t even make use of simultaneous data and voice is nil.

Can you imagine the outrage Apple would be facing? Legions of fifty year old’s whining their Verizon iPhones can’t do the basic things their kids do on AT & T is NOT happening.
